Least Mastered Skills

WHAT IS SIM?
An instructional material meant to reteach concepts
and skills.
Materials given to learners to help them master a
competency –based skill which they were not able
to develop during the regular classroom teaching
(with minimal intervention/guide of a teacher
Is SIM just another name for Module?
If not, what's the difference?
SIM vs MODULE

 TITLE CARD / COVER PAGE
 INTRODUCTION CARD
 Statements that may relate the topics to something very familiar
with the students. Also include the scope of the SIM.

 OBJECTIVE CARD
 This is where the objectives of the SIM are given. Builds on prior
learning of the students.
Guide Card
 Gives an overview of the lesson
 Presents the focus skills
 Mentions the learning competency
 A teaser that will increase the students interest towards
the material.
 With this is the brief explanation and preview of the
topics included in the SIM.
Activity Card
 Defines the task(s) that the learner should undertake in
order to develop a skill
 The task is competency-oriented and may be an
individual or group work.
 The purpose of the task(s) is to provide enough
practice for the learner so that he can perform the skill
automatically.
Activity Card

Embedding the Principles of Learning in the

Activity Cards
 Begin where the learners are.
 Adopt the activity to the learners’ style.
Activity Card
KEY POINTS
 Ensure alignment of activities with the tasks/objectives of the SIM
 Keep activities short and simple
 Provide a variety of activities to cater to the diverse learning
styles
 Provide a number of activities so that learner can have enough
practice in developing their skill.
To test whether our Activities are effective
in teaching the concept, the
Assessment Card is equally important.
Assessment Card
 Help the learner measure his/her level of
mastery of the skill upon completion of the
task(s).
 The result of the assessment identifies the
knowledge/skills that the learner may need
to enhance or develop further.
Enrichment Card
 This extends learning by providing
additional exercises for further
application of knowledge and skills
 May also contains additional information
to extend students’ knowledge
ANSWER CARD
This is the part wherein the correct
answers in the Activity Cards,
Assessment Cards, and Enrichment
Cards are located.
Reference Card
Provides additional content to the
coverage in the textbook
List the resources that the learner may
refer to for further reading.
TAKE NOTE!
 Simplicity
 Easy to Understand
 Easy to Reproduce
 Consider your SIM is intended for individualized instruction with
minimal or no supervision of a teacher at all.
 Make it interactive, as if you were talking to your students using
your SIM.

INTRODUCTION
Pupils sometimes have difficulties in comprehending
mathematical problems. They have strong feelings of an intense
fear, negative emotional reaction to the learning area and
inability to perform mathematical functions.
Since it has a negative relationship with mathematics
performance and achievement, it is important for the teachers to
give more attention and strategies to overcome this problem in
the school.
This is the reason why a Strategic Intervention
Material entitled The Power of Mind was introduced that enables
the learners to think critically on what operation should be used.
It would arouse also the interest of the pupils who encounter
difficulties in Mathematics specifically computations involving
the four fundamental operations.
Objectives:

Math teachers continuously strive to improve their instructional

practices to enhance student learning. The following are the aims of
the use of intervention material.
 To provide students with a common base of activities in current
mathematical concepts, processes, and skills.
 To focus students’ attention on a particular aspect of their
engagement and exploration experiences.
 To provide opportunities to demonstrate their conceptual
understanding, process skills, or behaviors.
 To show speed and accuracy in solving problems mentally.
 To enjoy Mathematics.
Task Analysis
Main Task

Solve mentally word problems involving four

fundamental operations
Sub Tasks:
Master the 4 Fundamental Operations (4Fs)
Increase Numeracy Level Assessment
Materials:
1. Board Games involving 4 Fs- Is a brilliant tool
designed to help the pupils improve their computational
skills.
2. Cross Number Puzzle- The cross-number puzzle
replaces the words in a crossword with numeric digits,
and math equations replace the word hints.
3. Picture Puzzle –These Picture Puzzle resources are
great way of getting children to review their number
skills. Just let them perform each calculation and color
the matching square with the correct color. They will
then produce a picture which you can check using the
answer key provided.
Materials:
4. Hidden Message Game –This activity helps the pupil
to discover or find the hidden message by solving the
exercises with corresponding letter as given in the legend.

5. Draw Your Luck– This activity helps the pupils to

become fast and accurate in doing calculations and solving
word problems
Costs:

Utilization
METHOD OF
UTILIZATION
Pupils were given a Numeracy Test to determine their
computational and problem solving skills involving addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division.

Only 16% were classified as numerates in Grade III pupils. This

became the basis of the preparation of the material.
The materials were given to the pupils. From then, each pupil
was given a material to use. Materials were designed to use for
groupings, pairing or for individual work. The pupils used the materials
for four consecutive days, every lunch break, from 12:30-1:15 and 4:10-
4:45 in the afternoon.
During Math time, window card of 4Fs was administered.
Through this it was then proven that their skills in four fundamental
operations were improving.
Results and IMPACT ON THE NUMERACY LEVEL ASSESSMENT
Findings SY: 2014-2015

Post-test results
show a remarkable
improvement from 16% to
55%. There was an
increase of 17.5% from 67%
to 84.50%.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Based from the findings, the Strategic
Intervention Material is an effective tool in the
development of pupils’ skills in Mathematics
especially in improving their skills in computation
and problem solving. Even without the teacher, the
device can be used during their free time and can
also serve additional enrichment activities.
It is therefore recommended that this must
be used as an intervention material.
LEAVE NO STUDENT
BEHIND!

nice day!
