Marine paints
The main role of coatings is to protect against corrosion each
part of ships, which are continuously exposed to severe
conditions, i.e. sea water immersion, splashes of sea water,
UV rays, maintain the value of assets, ensure vessel safety,
protect cargoes, e.g. grain or liquid

 Accurate mix ratio.

 Thorough mix prior to use.
 Pot-life of 1-2 hours.
 (Pot life depends on temperature, quantity, type of resin and hardener)
 Modifiers e.g. hydrocarbon resins or reactive diluents can be used
 Typical curing agents used in Marine and protective
coating
Curing agents [mostly based on amine chemistry].
o Polyamidoamines[Versamide™ type]
o Epoxy-amine adducts
o Mannich bases [Faster cure]
o Phenalkamines[Low temperature cure]
 Typical accelerators
o Tertiary amines e.g. Ancamine™ K54 type
o Alkyl phenols
Coating defects and improvement
 Failures and defects can manifest themselves at various times in the life
of a coating. Prior to application, they can take the form of settlement
and skinning, during application as runs and sags, shortly after
application as solvent popping and orange peel, and during service as
blistering and rust spotting.
 As far as the chemistry of epoxy resin; UV-instability is the pronounced
defect of epoxies. Polyurethane modified epoxy can overcome this
weakness of epoxies.
Considering the application part following are the main defects;
 Bubbles or Bubbling

Bubbles within a paint film appear as small blisters. These may be intact or broken (leaving a crater). Can be found
in excessively thick paint films, especially if spray applied, and also with roller application. This should not be
confused with blistering.

 Chalking

A friable, powdery layer on the surface of a paint film. A change of color or fading is also seen. Chalking rates vary
with pigment concentration and choice of binder. Chalking is a known characteristic of certain paints, for example,
epoxy paints.

 Bloom (Blush)

hazy deposit on the surface of the paint film resembling the bloom on a grape, resulting in a loss of gloss and a dulling
of color.
