SCENARIO OF CITY 2:

• This is a city that has existed for a very

long time. In the past it grew rapidly due
to industrialization and today it is mostly
a wealthy city. All houses have supplies of
electricity and water and residents use
large amounts of these things to maintain
their affluent lifestyles. Overtime the city
has expanded and therefore there is a
shortage of space . We think that Tokyo is
a great example for this.
• Is the city developed or not?

POPULATION
Solution 1

Move large corporations out of

Tokyo.
Japan has 3,500 listed companies. Half
of these have headquarters in Tokyo.
This means that for work people live in
the capital. Rural areas are depopulated .
Solution 2
Living underground.
Real life example: In the Chinese region of Shanxi province,
inhabitants live in caves.
Solution 3
•Control population size.

•Japan could implement a one-child

policy like China did. Or they could
encourage a reduction in birth rates
by making taxes favour families with
no, or less children. Extra taxes for
more than one child. Benefits for
couples who adopt.
Loss of green
space
Solution 1
Regulations
Tokyo can implement regulations in the future to preserve green space. They can
create administrative boundaries to preserve the greenspace areas and stop
building on those areas.
