INTRODUCTION

What is Composites:-
• It Is a material consisting of two or more
materials.
• It shows different physical or chemical
properties than base materials
• Combined together in a proper content and
fashion it gives superior properties.
• They are more versatile than their base
material.
WHY COMPOSITES IN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY AND
REACTOR FIELD ?

The main aim of the aerospace/aircraft Carbon and carbon fiber reinforced materials
industries is to reduce weight keeping the use in nuclear reactors, due to their excellent
thermal and mechanical properties.
same or more strength than the regular The mechanical strength of C/C composites
metals have. Therefore the composites increases with temperature, in compared to
use in aerospace field. the strength of metal and ceramics.
TYPES
OF COMPOSITES USED IN AEROSPACE & NUCLEAR
REACTOR FIELD
• Carbon Fiber Composites (CFC)
• Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (GFRP)
• Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (CFRP)
• Glass Laminate Aluminium Reinforced Epoxy (GLARE)
• Silicon Carbide fiber (SiC)

EXAMPLE OF USE OF
COMPOSITES IS AEROSPACE INDUSTRY
AND
NUCLEAR POWER REACTOR FIELD
Boeing 787

• Components that uses

composites
1. Upper and lower wing skin
2. Radom
3. Wing flaps
4. Elevators
5. Vertical fin
6. Horizontal Stabilizer

Use of composite is 80% by volume and 50% by weight.

B-2 BOMBER
• B-2 Bomber is made by Carbon
or Epoxy material.
• It is specially design for absorb
radar waves.
• Weight of B-2 bomber is
71,700 kg which is not that big
when we compared with the
normal plane/jet.
APPLICATION OF COMPOSITES IN AEROSPACE

• Spoiler
• Elevators
• Helicopter Blades
• Wing Flaps
• Satellite
• Missile
• Rockets
VERY HIGH
TEMPERATURE
REACTOR

Ceramic materials, coatings,

composites (CMCs) and metal
hybrids are being developed and
tested to allow for higher nuclear
reactor operating temperatures to
increase power generation
capacity, extend the service life and
improve the accident tolerance of
existing nuclear plants.
GFR GAS FUEL
COOLED REACTOR
SiC composite for coated particle fuel
type and shield fuel pin type have been
explored with the intent to improve
the energy conversion efficiency, reduce
the reactor core size, and to improve
reactor safety margins.
The SiC composites can provide excellent
safety margins due to their high
temperature stability and radiation
resistance to neutrons
APPLICATION OF COMPOSITE IN NUCLEAR POWER
REACTOR FIELD

• Control rods (VHTR)

• Control rod support (VHTR)
• Core Structure ( GFR)
• Fuel Pins (GFR)
ADVANTAGES OF COMPOSITE MATERIAL

• Corrosion resistance
• Fatigue resistance
• Light weight
• High heat resistance
• High strength to weight ratio
• Low density
• High stiffness.
CONCLUSION

• In this presentation we have concluded that why composites are widely used in aerospace
industries and in nuclear power reactors.
• We have also concluded that composites show excellent and superior than its base material in
most of the composites compositions.
