Why I Chose Mental Illness

Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions
that affect your mood, thinking and behavior

● Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)


● Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personalities)
● Bipolar Disorder
● General Anxiety Disorder
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
● (ADHD) and brain activity
Differences in brain development
● Affect attention, the ability to sit still, and self-control
● Primary symptoms include
○ Inattention
○ Hyperactivity
○ Impulsivity
Statistics Around ADHD
● 1 in 9 children aged 4-17 are diagnosed with ADHD
● 66% of all children diagnosed with ADHD are diagnosed with
another mental, emotional or behavioural disorder
Treatment
● Behavior therapy, including training for parents
● Medications
● School accommodations and interventions
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
● Involve experiencing a disconnection and lack of continuity
between thoughts, memories, surroundings, actions and identity
● People with dissociative disorders escape reality in ways that are
involuntary and unhealthy and cause problems with functioning in
everyday life.
● Primary symptoms have a wide range
○ Amnesia
○ existence of 2+ distinct identities
○ gaps in memory about everyday events
Statistics Around DID
● 1 in 17 are affected by DID
● DID patients will usually start treatment with 2-4 distinct identities
● Throughout treatment 12-14 identities will present themselves
Treatment
● Psychotherapy ● Family therapy
● Cognitive-behavioral therapy ● Meditation
● EMDR ● Hypnosis
● DBT ● Medication
Bipolar Disorder
● Causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels
● Moods range from periods of extremely happy highs “ups”
● Very sad “down” or hopeless periods
● Primary symptoms include
○ Periods of unusually intense emotion
○ Changes in sleep patterns
and activity levels
○ Unusual behaviors
Statistics Around Bipolar Disorder
● 3% of adolescents aged 13-18 are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder
● Females adolescents are 25% more likely to be diagnosed then
male adolescents
Treatment
Effective treatment plan usually includes a combination of
● Meds (Mood stabilizers, Atypical antipsychotics, Antidepressants)
● Psychotherapy
General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
● Display excessive anxiety or worry, most days for at least 6
months
● fear and anxiety can cause significant problems in areas of
their life, such as social interactions, school, and work
● Primary symptoms include
○ Restlessness, wound-up, or on-edge and being easily fatigued
○ Being irritable
○ Difficulty controlling feelings of worry
○ Having sleep problems or unsatisfying sleep
Statistics Around GAD
● Anxiety Disorders are the most common Mental disorder in
North America
● GAD effects about 3% of the population
Treatment
● Medication
● Therapy
● Meditation and calming techniques
