Learning Module 1
Introduction to blended and
outcome-based learning
Module Learning Outcomes
After studying this module, you should be able to:
1. describe blended learning;
2. use technology for online learning;
3. explain outcome-based education; and
3. show competencies and skills as a result of
outcome-based learning.
Science, Technology, and Society is an
interdisciplinary course that engages students to
confront the realities brought about by science and
technology in society, with all its socio-political,
cultural, economic, and philosophical underpinnings
at play (CHED Memorandum Order No 20).
What is the mode of instructional delivery of
NSC C202 (STS) in the university?
NSC C202 (Science, Technology,
and Society) is a blended learning
course.
In blended learning courses in JRU including
NSC C202 (Science, Technology, and Society),
students have one 1.5 hour face-to-face
(classroom) session in a week. The other
session is dedicated to accomplish online
activities and participate in online discussion
about the topic.
What is the benefit of enrolling in a
blended learning course?
Blended learning allows students to have
some self-directed learning from online
participation and activities, while at the same
time, students also benefit from the face-to-
face interactions with their classmates and
contact with the instructor in a classroom
setting.
Currently, JRU is using a Learning
Management System (LMS) software
called canvas.
In the University, the Information and Technology
Blended Learning (ITBL) office is located at building H
(Room 202).
The services given by the coordinator and the
staff of student assistants are the following:
 Provide training to the faculty as well as students on
the use of canvas.
 Upload to the system the online learning modules
prepared by team of instructors for blended learning
courses.
 Prepare examination schedule for blended learning
courses.
 Provide assistance to both faculty and students who
have difficulty in using the canvas for blended and non-
blended learning courses.
How do you access the STS online modules in
Canvas?

Step 1: Login to your Gmail account

(@my.jru.edu)
Note: If you need assistance for your @jru.edu account,
please go to H-211 (IT office)

Step 2: Go to the website using the URL

jru.instructure.com/login/google
(You will be automatically logged in to canvas)
Note: Please don’t forget to logout both accounts once
you’re done.
What is the educational theory being
adopted by the university?
Outcome-based education (OBE) is an educational
theory that bases each part of an educational system
around goals (outcomes). By the end of the educational
experience, each student should have achieved the goals.

Jose Rizal University is one of the educational

institutions that adapts Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in
all of its program offerings. It aims at equipping you with the
knowledge, competencies, and orientations needed for
success after you have left school.
What is the OBE Framework for JRU?
What are the levels of outcomes in
OBE?
The next slide will give you the CLOs
for STS.
At the end of this course, you should be able to:

CLO1: show knowledge, reflect, and analyze on the relationship

of science and technology and their effects to societal
transformation and nation building;
CLO2: manifest skills in carrying out designated tasks on the
advancements of science and technology; and
CLO3: manifest thinking and writing skills in accomplishing
written outputs from designated tasks assigned in the course.
How will you be assessed in STS?
Assessment is the process of measuring what you
know and have learned. In STS, the course assessment
involves the following:

Written Works (WW) (restricted essay, summative test, written reports,

reflection paper, movie analysis, scientific journal reflection, and
documentation, etc.)
Performance Tasks (PT) (group oral presentation, presentation of
critique paper, seminar style program, scientific journal reflection,
and oral participation, etc.)
Products (P) (oral and written reports, reflection paper, and product
creation about 4R’s)
Term exams (prelim exam, midterm exam, and final exam)

The written works, performance tasks, and products

are measured using tests and rubrics.
