• A teacher is a person who helps students to acquire knowledge,
competence or virtue. • A teacher not only teaches, but inspires and encourages students to be their best. School is not only a place of academic learning, but of social learning as well, and will have an effect on how students interact with others in the future. CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT TEACHER:
1. An effective teacher likes and enjoys teaching.
This means that the teacher is proud of her profession and that she loves and enjoys her job 2. She has the mastery of the subject matter. A teacher cannot teach well if she has not mastered the lessons she is teaching. This is based on the principle that a teacher cannot give what she doesn’t have. 3. She has the necessary self-confidence and trust in what she can do. The teacher believes in herself, her capabilities that she can teach well. 4. She has the mastery of the methods and tools of teaching. The teacher must know how to teach. She should be knowledgeable of the different methods of teaching and how to use them appropriately. 5. She has the mastery of the medium of instruction and art of communication. The teacher should have a good command of the medium of instruction and be able to skillfully formulate questions, explain points of clarifications and knows how to react to student’s insights. An effective teacher is one who motivates the children to speak effectively. 6. She should know how to develop her personality. A teacher as a role model should know how to carry herself by observing good grooming, with good taste and decency, maintain neatness. She should possess virtues such as: patience, justness, fairness, punctuality, broadmindedness as well as open-mindedness. She should also have a wholesome sense of humor. 7. She should have a mastery of lesson planning and subject matter organization. Lesson plan serves as a guide and an integral part in the teaching learning process. The teacher should be able to know how to organize the activities to be undertaken by the pupils. 8. She should be healthy. If the teacher is healthy, she should assure effective teaching and learning and produce mentally healthy student’s. As the saying goes “HEALTH IS WEALTH”. Hence the teacher must be physically, mentally, spiritually, and morally healthy. 9. She should grow professionally. A teacher should equip herself with knowledge through seminars, training workshop and attend graduate studies. She should keep herself abreast with researches and studies pertaining to her discipline so that her pupils can get the most from her teaching. 10. She should maintain harmonious relationship with her colleagues, the non-teaching personnel, and administrators and the community as a whole. As the saying goes “NO MAN IS AN ISLAND”. A teacher cannot keep herself in isolation because she has to work with the colleagus in all of the activities that the school will undertake like curricular planning, making revisions, meetings, etc..
