THE DISABILITY

MODEL
CBR Workshop 3
Objectives:
At the end of the session, interns are expected to:
■ Compare and contrast the four approaches to Disability (Disability Models) in
addressing disability
– Charity Model
– Medical Model
– Social Model
– Human Rights Model
■ Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each disability models as an independent
approach
■ Evaluate the effects of the different models as an independent approach and a
holistic approach in relation to disability
Activity
■ Debate on disability related issues using the different disability models
■ Poster/ Slogan Making
Schedule: (breaks will be incorporated between activities)

8:10- 8:20 Preparation
8:20-9:00 Debate for topic 1
9:00-9:40 Debate for topic 2
9:40-10:20 Debate for topic 3
10:20-10:40 Synthesis and Conclusion
10:40-12:00 Poster/Slogan Making
What model do you think will be the most
effective to address disability?
Debate Mechanics
■ Participants will be divided into 4 groups randomly, to represent the four disability
models
■ Participants will have 10 minutes to prepare for the debate
– During preparation, participants will be given a list of issues concerning
disability
– Participants have to prepare supporting arguments, reasoning and evidences
(A-R-E) for their assigned model regarding the given issues
– Participants may search resources and literature to support their debate
position
■ Each member of the group should be given a chance to speak during the debate
■ Each group will be tasked to write a summary paper containing the strengths and
weaknesses presented by all groups during the debate

A. 1st Proposition (3 min) B. 1st Opposition (2 min)
- State supporting Arguments, - Rebuttal of 1st proposition of ANY
Reasoning and Evidences (A-R-E) group

C. 2ND Proposition (3 min) D. 2nd Opposition (2 min)

E. Final Proposition (3 min)
- Summary of points
- State why proposition should win
- No new arguments can be brought up
Summary of Debate
■ Shall be accomplished per group
■ Draft will be written in a 1 whole sheet of yellow paper. Final output will be
typewritten and uploaded in Moodle (CBR workshop output)
■ Filename: Month-Disability model (ex. July-Social model)

disability
■ During the given time each group must be able to have a creative poster out of their
prepared slogan

- Any coloring/ art materials
