LINEAR MEASUREMENT DEVICES

3 MEASUREMENT

Measurement is an assignment of a number

to a characteristic of an object or event,
which can be compared with other objects or
events
4 TYPES OF MEASUREMENT

 Linear Measurement
 Angular Measurement
5 LINEAR MEASUREMENT
Linear Measurement is defined as a measurement of length. An example of linear
measure is using a yard stick to find out the length of a table.

Linear Measurement Devices:

 Steel Rule
 Calipers
 Dividers
 Depth Gauge
 Vernier Caliper
 Micrometer
 Slip Gauge
 Height Gauge
 Comparator
6 STEEL RULE

 The steel rule is a basic measuring tool

 A good steel rule is a surprisingly accurate measuring device
 What is rule and scale?
 Steel Rules come in 4 types:
 Spring Tempered, Flexible, Narrow, Hook, and Short-length rules
7 VERNIER CALIPER

The Vernier caliper is an extremely precise measuring instrument; it is

used to measure internal and external distances extremely accurately
8 PRINCIPLE & APLICATIONS

The principle used is that using two scales whose divisions differ
by a small amount , we can measure this small amount . Thus the
least count is the difference between one main scale division and
the vernier scale division . Suppose that in a mainscale each
division is 1 mm.

APPLICATIOINS:
 Internal dimensions
 Outside dimensions
 Depth
9 CALIPERS

 A caliper is a device used to measure the distance between two opposite sides of
an object
 But a caliper can be as simple as a compass with inward or outward-facing points
10 TYPES OF CALIPERS

 Inside Caliper
 Outside Caliper
 Odd Leg Caliper
 Digital Caliper
11 DIVIDER

 Divider is also a linear measurement instrument

which is used to measure the distance between two
points
 It can be used for inscribing circles or arcs
 In their simplest form, dividers consist of a jointed
pair of legs, each with a sharp point
 It can also used for taking off and transferring
dimensions
12 SCREW GAUGE / MICROMETER

A micrometer, sometimes known as a

micrometer screw gauge, is a device which
measures small distances or thicknesses
between its two faces, one of which can be
moved away from or towards the other by
turning a screw with a fine thread
13 WORKING PRINCIPLE

Micrometer works on the principle of nut and bolt

14 MAIN PARTS

Thus the main parts of a micrometer screw gauge are:

 Frame
 Anvil
 Spindle
 Sleeve
 Thimble
 Ratchet
 Screw
 Lock
15
TYPES OF MICROMETER

 Outside micrometer
 Inside micrometer
 Depth Micrometer
16 HEIGHT GAUGE

A height gauge is a measuring device used for determining the height of objects,
