Essential Factors of Development
1. Maturation - The development or unfolding
traits potentially present in the individual
considering his hereditary endowment.
2. Learning -It is the result of activities and
experiences on the person himself.(Gines, et
al., 1998)
3. Environmental Influences- in and through
which the growing takes place.
Major Principles of Development
1. Development follows an orderly sequence
which is predictable.
CEPHALOCAUDAL PATTERN
 According to this principle, the child gains control of the head first, then
the arms and then the legs.
 Development proceeds from the head downward.

PROXIMODISTAL PATTERN
 Development proceeds from the center of the body outward. .
 This means that the spinal cord develops before outer parts of the body.
 The child's arms develop before the hands and the hands and feet
develop before the fingers.
Major Principles of Development
2. The rate of development is unique to every
individual.
Major Principles of Development
3. Development takes place gradually.
Major Principles of Development
4. Development is complex because it is
the product of biological, cognitive, and
socio-emotional processes.
