Motivation
 During the last decade, Pakistan has gone through a worst
period of electric power shortfall. Power generation and
distribution and transmission network is insufficient to meet
demand during peak months of summer.
 According to the report by Water and Power Development
Authority (WAPDA), Pakistan has the potential of
100,000MW of hydro power with identified sites of
approximately 60,000MW but we convert only 11% of it into
electric power.

Small-Hydro Power Plant
 Hydropower can be classified on the bases of capacity as:
1. pico (< 10kW)
2. micro (11kW – 500 kW)
3. mini (501kW – 2000 kW)
4. large (> 2000 kW)
First three types Pico, micro and mini are collectively called
small hydro-power and this classification may differ from country
to country.

Introduction

 Doubly Fed Induction Machine is a wound rotor induction

machine also known as slip-ring induction machine.
 There are two three phase windings, one stationary and one
rotating both separately connected to grid. Thus the term
“Doubly Fed”.
 It is mostly used in variable speed power sources and a
back-to-back convertor on rotor-side.

6
Problem Statement
 For large scale Hydro-power generation, synchronous
generators are used running at synchronous speed in order
to generate power at fixed voltage and frequency since they
have large reservoirs for continuous flow.
 Small scale hydro power plants are based on run-of-river.
They can work as stand alone unit or be integrated into the
grid. Since water flow rate varies during 24-hr period, so will
the voltage and frequency of power generated. To overcome
this problem and achieve optimum efficiency, we use doubly
fed induction generator with back-to-back convertor
connected between the rotor and grid to operate at variable
speeds.
7
Conversion Topology

 Power generated at the stator winding at desired frequency

is directly fed to the grid.
 We use two converters at rotor side to adjust generated
voltage’s frequency and phase .One is Rotor-side voltage
source converter (Rvsc) which converts AC into DC and the
other is Grid-side voltage source converter which converts
Dc to AC. These back to back converters (AC-DC-AC) gives
a mechanism of converting the variable voltage at variable
frequency into fixed voltage at fixed frequency

Application

DFIG is currently the system of choice for wind energy market

as variable speed operation gives higher efficiency. It gives
many advantages such as variable speed operation. As rotor
power is only 30% of generator power, so cost and power loss
is reduced.

11
Expected Outcomes

 To simulate the DFIG model on MATLAB Simulink.

 To build the hardware model of DFIG.
 To test hardware model under different load conditions.
