Tools for Preservation
• In order to successfully preserve foods, you must have the proper
tools to implement the process. The following are the tools used to
extend the shelf life of food.

a. Measuring Spoon
Used to measure the amount
of ingredients to be used.
a. Strainer
Used for washing and
draining fruits and vegetables
c. Knife
A sharp blade used for cutting and
slicing meat, fruits and vegetables
d. Pots
Have two looped handles, which
range in capacity from 5 to 8 quarts,
are deep, and have enough space
for cooking meat and vegetables. A
good quality, heavy-bottomed pot
provides even heat distribution for
cooking jam and jellies.
e. Peeler
used to remove fruits and
vegetables skin
f. Grater
Used for shaving and granting skin
of fruits and vegetables.
g. Saucepan
Has a long handle on one side of
pan and usually comes with a
fitted lid.
h. Spoon
Use to measure small amounts of
ingredients, such as salt, sugar,
vinegar, etc., Nonreactive metal
spoons should be used so the
taste of acidic foods will not be
changed when they come in
contact. These can stainless steel,
anodized aluminum, or wooden
spoon.
i. Mixing bowls
Used to mix the ingredients. Bowls
made from glass and stainless
steel are the most durable.
j. Measuring cups
Used to measure dry and liquid
ingredients
k. Tongs
Used to transfer materials like in
canning lids from hot water in the
saucepan and putting them on the
top of each jar.
l. Heat-resistant container
Used for storing the preserved
food. Canning jars like those of
used mayonnaise bottles are
suitable when preserving. Make
sure the container is dry before
filling it with preserved food to
avoid a spoilage.
m. Kitchen timer
Used to tell the specific time a
food should undergo a certain
process ( i.e. boiling, and
simmering); works as a countdown
timer.
n. Spatula and laddle
Used to mix, scoop, and spread
mixture or liquid from one
container to another.
Generalization

You can substitute these tools and utensils for tools in your home.
However, you must recognize the quality and characteristic of each
