Concept behind Animation
Persistence of vision
Animation is the process of displaying still
images in a rapid sequence to create the Refer to brain retaining the image of what eyes see even
illusion of movement. These images can be after the image is no longer visible. it is called
hand drawn, computer generated, or pictures persistence of vision
of 3D objects.
Brain can recognize images as separate images if they
are viewed at 12 or fewer images per second.
If the picture appear faster then 12 per second they begin
to merge into each other creating the illusion of moment.
Principles Of
Animation
1 Squash and Stretch
Squash and stretch is a way of deforming an
object such that it shows how rigid the object is.
This action gives the illusion of weight and
volume to a character as it moves. It shows the
interplay and reaction of objects to external
forces like speed, gravity, and stress.

2 Anticipation
Anticipation is used in animation to set the
audience up for an action that is about to
happen, and to make the action appear more
realistic.
3 Staging
Staging is presenting an action or item so that
it is easily understood. It means setting the
scene – attracting the viewer’s attention and
focusing it on a particular subject or area of
the screen before the action takes place.
4 Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose
"Straight ahead action" means
drawing out a scene frame by
frame from beginning to end,
while "pose to pose" involves
starting with drawing a few key
frames, and then filling in the
intervals later.
5 Follow Through and Overlapping Action
Follow through is the idea that separate parts of
the body will continue moving after the character
has come to a stop.

Overlapping action is very similar in that it

means different parts of the body will move at
different times.
6 Slow In and Slow Out
The movement of the human body, and most other
objects, needs time to accelerate and slow down.
Slow-ins and slow-outs soften the action, making
it more life-like. For this reason, animation looks
more realistic if it has more drawings near the
beginning and end of an action, emphasizing the
7 Arc
All actions, with few exceptions (such as the
animation of a mechanical device), follow an
arc or slightly circular path. Arcs give
animation a more natural action and better
flow.

8 Secondary Action
Secondary action refers to creating actions
that emphasize or support the main action
of the animation. Secondary action creates
interest and realism in animation.
9 Timing
Timing is the essence of animation. The speed
at which something moves gives a sense of
what the object is, the weight of an object,
and why it is moving.

10 Exaggeration
Exaggeration is a method of emphasising
something to increase its significance or draw
attention to it. Exaggeration can be used to
create extremely cartoony movements, or
incorporated with a little more restrain to more
realistic actions.
11 Solid drawing
The principle of solid drawing means taking into
account forms in three-dimensional space, giving
them volume and weight.

12 Appeal
Appeal means anything that a person likes
to see. This can be quality of charm,
design, simplicity, communication or
magnetism.
The important thing is that the viewer
feels the character is real and interesting.
