components Harvesting of harvesting
 Rainwater Harvesting : Technology used for collecting and storing
rainwater from rooftops , land surface on which rain falls by using
simple techniques and storing this water in natural reservoirs ,tanks,
and dams for later use .

 Its is an easy ,simple process so its only in your best interest to take a
look at rainwater harvesting and its benefits to your home .
Why we have to apply this technology ?
 Reduce groundwater pollution .
 Avoid the flooding of roads .
 Supplement domestic water needs .
 Meet the increasing demand of water and the population growth .
 Increase in urban areas .
 Saving money .
 Prevent over use of Aquifers.
 Reduce the soil erosion .
Methods :
1- Runoff harvesting : : runoff water is collected , gardens , fields , parks
and open areas can be used to harvest the rain water runoff .

2- Catchment (Roof Top rainwater harvesting ) : Catchment Area as the roof

top of houses , offices and complexes and its low expensive and very
effective .
Components of rain water harvesting :

Catchment

Transportation

First flush

Filter

Tanks
• Catchment : Roof tops are favorite because of the large coefficient of
run-off generated from them and the water that leaves the rooftop
may be (70-90)% of the water that falls on it .
• Transportation (Gutters and Pipes ) : collect and transport the water
to the storage tanks and this pipes made from PVC .
• Filter and first flush : the first rain comes with a lot of dirty and
dissolved air pollutants and the filter removes the grit , dirty that the
rainwater may transport from the catchment before the water entres
the storage tanks .

First flush : device diverted the rainwater away from the storage tank
• Storage Tanks : Structure where the water is stored and they can be
varied according to:
1- Shape (Square and Rectangular )
2- Material (Reinforced cement concrete, Plastic Sheet)
3-Position(Above and Underground) .
Advantages :
 Reducing Water bills .
 Easy to maintain .
 Reduce demand on ground water .
 Can be used for several non drinking purposes .
Disadvantages :
 Storage Limits .
 Initial High Cost .
 Regular Maintenance .
 Depends upon the frequency and amount of rainfall therefore its not
a dependable water source .
 Increasing the cost of building .
