• Culture is about life, world, values, attitudes, habits of thought, patterns of
behavior, relationship, with others which is embaded/attented in people
way of think which influence the mind set. • CULTURES: -the way everyone is thinking something -the way people do -the way people assume -the way people expect • The results if culture is not integrated into language within teaching language: - The inability of learners to fully assimilate meaning within contexts of language use - The inability of the material to promote “realism” - The inability of the material to bring about “immersion” into the new world which will leave bias, stereo-typing and prejudice behind. • Five Dimension of Culture: - Equality X Hierarchy: eg. Perbedaan kasta di berbagai daerah - Individual X Group: eg. When there is someone wants to do something alone, he/she doesn’t need to do this with other people (PRIVACY) - Direct X Indirect: eg. Directly or indirectly for someone to confront with others to say something, which it might make others hurted. - Task X Relationship: eg. People that take someone who has relationship to be put in a certain position, for instance in a factory. - Risk X Cautions: eg. There are varieties of people who choose to do something carefully and choose to do something dangerous. • CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT: - Honeymoon: excited and happy to get something new. Eg. When someone will go abroad/overseas, he/she is going to prepare everything to be used in other countries. He/she even feels so anxious of he/she will be. - Culture shock: feel so different with usual culture in his/her own country (weather, language, culture); find new problems: confused how to find food, drink, other items. - Cultural Adjustment: feel adapted from the culture in other country; can adjust the condition (food, drink, weather, etc.) that are so different with previous condition he/she faces. - Mental Isolation: Although he/she has been adjusting her/his own self with other culture, he/she is psychologically and mentally isolated. - Acceptance and Integration: start to know about culture, how to do everything (habit), weather, etc. • RE-ENTRY PROCESS -Acceptance+Integration: Why acceptance and integration come in first period because “The person has already been in certain area (originate from that area)” - Return Anxiety: feel so anxious to leave from previous place. - Honeymoon Period: happy and proud to be back to origin place; feel as prioritized person. - Re-entry Shock: confused with how to find childhood friends - Re-Integration
