• Culture is about life, world, values, attitudes, habits of thought, patterns of

behavior, relationship, with others which is embaded/attented in people

way of think which influence the mind set.
• CULTURES:
-the way everyone is thinking something
-the way people do
-the way people assume
-the way people expect
• The results if culture is not integrated into language within teaching
language:
- The inability of learners to fully assimilate meaning within contexts of
language use
- The inability of the material to promote “realism”
- The inability of the material to bring about “immersion” into the new world
which will leave bias, stereo-typing and prejudice behind.
• Five Dimension of Culture:
- Equality X Hierarchy: eg. Perbedaan kasta di berbagai daerah
- Individual X Group: eg. When there is someone wants to do
something alone, he/she doesn’t need to do this with other people
(PRIVACY)
- Direct X Indirect: eg. Directly or indirectly for someone to confront
with others to say something, which it might make others hurted.
- Task X Relationship: eg. People that take someone who has
relationship to be put in a certain position, for instance in a factory.
- Risk X Cautions: eg. There are varieties of people who choose to do
something carefully and choose to do something dangerous.
• CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT:
- Honeymoon: excited and happy to get something new. Eg. When someone
will go abroad/overseas, he/she is going to prepare everything to be used
in other countries. He/she even feels so anxious of he/she will be.
- Culture shock: feel so different with usual culture in his/her own country
(weather, language, culture); find new problems: confused how to find
food, drink, other items.
- Cultural Adjustment: feel adapted from the culture in other country; can
adjust the condition (food, drink, weather, etc.) that are so different with
previous condition he/she faces.
- Mental Isolation: Although he/she has been adjusting her/his own self with
other culture, he/she is psychologically and mentally isolated.
- Acceptance and Integration: start to know about culture, how to do
everything (habit), weather, etc.
• RE-ENTRY PROCESS
-Acceptance+Integration: Why acceptance and integration come in first
period because “The person has already been in certain area (originate
from that area)”
- Return Anxiety: feel so anxious to leave from previous place.
- Honeymoon Period: happy and proud to be back to origin place; feel
as prioritized person.
