STATE • Flooding and landslides caused by the overflowing of Brahmaputra River affected 4.3 million people in the state of Assam. • 120 deaths were reported as of date. • Tens of thousands were displaced with 83,000 people seek temporary shelters at camps set up by the Government of India . • The 2019 Brahmaputra Floods, till July 16, affected a total of 52,59,142 people, 1,63,962.02 hectares of crop area, in 30 districts in the state of Assam. 2400 an endangered species of rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park were badly affected by the Flood. • The state government of Assam set up 128 relief camps under the surveillance of Chief minister for people displaced, and has made arrangements for drinking water, food and medical teams and rescue goods. 154 people died due to drowning, electrocution and diseases caused due to water contamination. CASE STUDY II- UTTARAKHAND NATURAL REASON • Unprecedented heavy rainfall, 375% more than the benchmark rainfall during a normal monsoon from 14 to 17 June, 2013. • Mutiday cloudburst leading to heavy rainfall and cloudburst • Chorabari glacier melted and this triggered the flooding of Mandakini river • Landslide • Debris blocked the river causing major overflow MAN MADE REASON • Growth of tourism • Unchecked rapid increase of hotels, shops, multistorey house in ecologically fragile areas • Unplanned construction leading to landslide. • Rapid growth of hydroelectricity dams • More than 220 power and mining projects running in 14 valleys • Deforestation • Warnings by the Indian Meteorological Department predicting heavy rains were not given wide publicity beforehand. • 5748 people were dead and 4550 villages were affected • The Indian , the Indian Army, and paramilitary troops evacuated more than 110,000 people from the flood ravaged area • The Navy had sent 45 naval divers, and the Air force had deployed 43 aircraft including 36 helicopters. • Even after a week, dead bodies had not been removed from Kedarnath town, resulting in water contamination and various types of health problems like fever, diarrhoea.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
• Uttar Pradesh government announced financial assistance of 25 crore • Govt of Haryana, Delhi and Maharashtra 10 crore each • Govt of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh 5 crore each • US ambassador extended financial support of USD $150000 through United States Agency. Provided further financial aid of USD $75,000. CASE STUDY III-KERALA FLOOD • Level 3 calamity, worst flood after 1924 • Low pressure, heavy rain (116% more rain than the normal) • Landslides (soil piping) • 35 out of 54 dams were opened • Property damage Rs 400 billion • About 483 died, 140 missing, 1 million were evacuated • 14 districts were on red alert

for rescue, 18 medical teams of defense forces, 90 teams of NDRF and 7 companies of Central Armed Polica Forcewere pressed into service along with over 500 boats and necessary rescue equipments. • A total of 4,537 from the fishermen community participated in the rescue o peration with 669 fishing boats.
