Components of Linear Functions
The slope of a line is the ratio of the amount of rise to
𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒 𝒚𝟏 −𝒚𝟐
the amount of run =
𝑟𝑢𝑛 𝒙𝟏 −𝒙𝟐

Examples:
Determine the slope and the y-intercept of each linear function
3𝑥 − 5𝑦 = 15
−3𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 10
In a linear function 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, the
x-intercept is the value of x when
𝑓 𝑥 = 0. In other words, to determine
the x- intercept of a linear function 𝑓 𝑥 ,
equate 𝑓 𝑥 to 0 and solve for x.
Example:
Determine the x-intercept of each linear function.
𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 7. 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑓 𝑥 = 0.
𝑓 𝑥 = 0 = 3𝑥 − 7
3𝑥 = 7

Hence, the x- intercept of f(x) is .

2
𝑥=8
Hence, the x- intercept of f(x) is 8.

Graphing Linear Functions
You have learned earlier that a linear equation
can be described by its equation, either in the form
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 or 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐. A linear
equation can also be described by its graph.
Graphing linear equations can be done
using any of the four methods:
1. Using two points
2. Using x- and y- intercepts
3. Using the slope and the y- intercept
4. Using the slope and a point
Using Two Points
In Geometry, you learned that two points
determine a line.
Example:
Graph 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 + 1
(2, 5)
(𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒 = 2)
Since the slope of the
(1, 3) 2
function is , use the
1
rise of 2 and the run of
1 to determine the
coordinates of the
second point
Examples
Graph the following linear functions using the mentioned
method..
1. 𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 2
2. 𝑓 𝑥 = −4𝑥 + 5
−1
3. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥+3
2
2
4. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥−4

Determining Linear Functions
Linear Functions can be determined using the
following formulae:
1. Slope- intercept form: 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏
2. Given x- and y- intercept
3. Point-slope form: 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
𝑦2 −𝑦1
4. Two- point form: 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = (𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
𝑥2 −𝑥1

Determining f(x)=mx+b given the Slope and a Point
A linear function whose slope and a point on its graph are
given can be determined by substituting the given values to
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑏
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
1. slope=4; (3, −3) 𝑦 − −3 = 4(𝑥 − 3)
𝑦 + 3 = 4𝑥 − 12
𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 15
𝐟(𝐱) = 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏𝟓
Example: Write the linear function whose graph has the given slope
and passes through the given point..
𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 )
𝒚 − −𝟐 = −𝟑 𝒙 − −𝟏
2. slope=−3;
(−1, −2) 𝒚 + 𝟐 = −𝟑 𝒙 + 𝟏
𝒚 + 𝟐 = −𝟑𝒙 − 𝟑
𝒚 = −𝟑𝒙 − 𝟓
𝐟 𝐱 = −𝟑𝒙 − 𝟓
