SITUATION ANALYSIS During my internship period ,I have encountered many pupils of grade 7 who are poor in both comprehending and analyzing mathematical word problems. In straight computation like plain addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, they can solve them successfully but when these are written in the verbal context, they feel difficulty. Most of them find it hard to picture the situation indicated by the problem they are trying to solve. The slow one even ask the meaning of certain word in the problem. Some pupils can’t relate or connect the ideas explained in the problem. From the achievement test which was conducted in class 7, I found that most of the students have faced difficulty in solving mathematical word problem. OBJECTIVES To improve the pupils’ limited vocabulary words in mathematics by providing interesting and challenging vocabulary activities involving Mathematics. To develop the pupils’ technique in solving word problem. PLANNING FOR ACTION Day1 : Informing the school head about the action research to be undertaken and to grant permission to conduct the research. Day2: Orienting the pupils and co-teachers regarding the action research. Day3 to Day 10th: Improving the pupils' limited vocabulary words in Mathematics 1. Survey the Mathematics vocabulary skill of the pupils. 2. Establish a tutor-tutee relationship . Select intelligent students from the class and assign one bench to each intelligent student. Who will help the slow learners to develop problem solving skill. 3. Provide interesting and challenging vocabulary activities involving Math vocabulary activities such as puzzle and game. Day11th to Day 20th: Developing the pupils’ techniques in solving word problems 1. Draw a graph, chart, graphic organizer or list to help the students organize their information found in the word problem. Then the pupils will be able to organize the given data and connect the ideas expressed in the problem. 2. Ask the students to make representation of objects so they will be able to visualize the problem clearly. They can use ruler, play money, realia , blocks, dice, etc. 3. Substitute large numbers by simpler numbers and use them instead of what are given in the problem, Problems can also be restated in much simpler terms. 4. Solve by "trial and error" or "guess and check" by using the answers provided in multiple choice problems. EVALUATION
The data recorded in the observation will be
analyzed as such
Improvement seen in the development in
problem solving skills of word problems in mathematics. Improvement in mathematical vocabulary and techniques in solving word problem.
