AUTOMATION IN

PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY
INTRODUCTION
Petrochemicals are chemicals made from petroleum
(crude oil) and natural gas.
The petrochemical industry of today is an indispensable
part of the manufacturing and consuming sectors,
churning out products which include paint, plastic,
rubber, detergents, dyes, fertilizers and textiles
The Indian petrochemical industry has been one of
India’s fastest growing domestic industries, comprising
both small and large scale enterprises.
Due to its linkages with various domestic manufacturing
industries such as pharmaceuticals, construction,
agriculture, and textiles etc it is undoubtedly an integral
part of the energy value chain.

The leading players in India are Reliance Industries,

Gujarat State Fertilizer and Chemicals, Tata Chemicals,
Haldia Petrochemicals and Hindustan Organic chemicals
The aggregate demand of all the key segments in the
petrochemical industry is likely to regain a sharp positive
trajectory over the next 12 months, with key players aiming
to ramp up scale and increase recruitment
AUTOMATION IN PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY

Data management within the petrochemical industry

occurs on different levels at different stages of the
production process. Each data layer provides information
that is used in the layer above to make decisions within
that domain.

 Industry IT and automation systems can be broadly

categorized into three areas
 Real time control and monitoring systems, e.g.SCADA
 Plant automation management systems
 Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems
Information Systems Automation
Designed and implemented interface to automatically
update database for laboratory information management
system.

Fertilizer Loading Automation

Designed and developed PLC based loading control
system. System included PLC design fabrication, process
interlocks, pump control, conveyor control, and rail and
ship loading automation.
Data Acquisition and Control Applications
Designed, developed and installed a fully integrated
PLC based data acquisition, monitoring and reporting
system for an ethylene glycol plant
Conclusion
Petrochemical organizations should consider their overall systems,
how each system is or can be connected to the overall systems
structure, and its benefit to the organization.
Careful consideration must be placed in the investment in IT and
management systems that sustain potential future demands of the
company and have the capacity to accommodate IT additions and
alternative systems, create in as little disruption to the information
management as possible.
Efficient integration and appropriate interfacing, creating seamless
IT communication, is essential for achieving streamlined data
management and successful business management
AUTOMATION in petrochemical industry is having a fast growth
for meeting its increasing demands.
