Laboratory 4

Blood Vessels II: Arteries*

All Slides/material (Red or not) is

important for you to know

Professor Ben Ondimu

1
Learning objectives for Lab 4
• At the completion of this laboratory, the student will
be able to:
– Identify the arteries below the diaphragm in a human
model or photograph of a human.
– Identify the arteries below the diaphragm on a dissected
fetal pig or photograph of a fetal pig.
• Be able to trace the path of a drop of blood through
the arteries and veins.
• LAB MANUAL READING: Exercise 32 and Dissection Exercise 4
• MATERIALS: human torso model, fetal pig model, fetal pig,
dissecting tray, dissecting kit, gloves, safety goggles

You should know all the vessels and structures on this slide
Remember your ABCs: Aortic arch, Brachiocephalic, Carotid, subclavian 3

Major Vessels of Arterial System

Reminders:

1. Arteries carry blood

AWAY from heart.

2. Same ‘tube’ is
named something
different depending
on the anatomical
landmark it’s near.

Fetal Pig Blood Vessel Dissection Schedule
• Blood vessel labs : Dissection of blood vessels
& Lymphatic ducts of the fetal pig (Dissection
Exercise 4, pp. 719-728 in Marieb)

– Dissection 1(Previous/Lab 3 - arteries above

diaphragm and upper limb)
– Dissection 2 (Today/Lab 4 - arteries below
diaphragm and lower limbs)
– Dissection 3 (Next lab/Lab 5 – all veins)

Precautions for Fetal Pig Dissection
• You must wear gloves and goggles for this lab!
• ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD OR DRINK
• Be EXTREMELY careful when using the scalpels
– Keep your index finger on the top of the blade
– Be careful not to inadvertently cut structures
• Use a blunt probe, or your gloved fingers to dissect
away tissue. Use the scalpel ONLY for initial
cutting. Proceed S-L-O-W-L-Y.
• Discard scraps/liquid into the appropriate container
• Gloves, paper towels -> regular trash

18
Getting started with Fetal Pig Dissection…
• Work in groups of two
• Get some paper towels and keep them at your lab
table
• Get your instruments and dissecting tray ready
• Get a fetal pig and cut the string/twine to open the
bag
• Let the Fetal pig out of the bag! 
• discard the fluid left in bag in a special container
I will show you; you’ll be using this pig all
semester and replacing the fluid each time.
19
Getting started with Fetal Pig Dissection…

– Try to identify the major organs you see before you

begin dissecting any further
– Note that the pigs have been dual injected with dyes
(red = arteries, blue = veins)
• Look at the preserved, dissected fetal pig (back
side bench of lab) to get an idea of what you’ll
see for each system
• Also use the fetal pig models (Keys are
provided).

20
Things you should do in lab today
• Use the human torso models, fetal pig models and the
provided keys to identify the arteries (In human and
pig) listed for Laboratory 4 in your laboratory guide.

• Perform Fetal pig dissection of arteries listed for

Laboratory 4 in your laboratory Guide. See Marieb’s
Lab manual pp.721-724 for instructions.

• Complete Laboratory 4 Assignment (Next slide) on a

separate sheet of paper, put your name on it, and hand
it in next week.

21
Lab 4 Assignment (Ref Figures 32.3 - 32.7)
Tracing Blood (Human Vessels
Answer the following blood tracing questions.
•You can use any type of diagram you like for this. I suggest
something like: Vessel 1  Vessel 2  Vessel 3... to keep it
simple.
Blood Trace Exercise 4 - trace the path of a drop of blood from just
after it leaves the heart until it reaches right ankle.
Blood Trace Exercise 5 - trace the path of a drop of blood from just
after it leaves the heart until it reaches liver. (Refer to Figure 32.6a
from the laboratory manual for detailed circulation in the vicinity of
the liver.)
Blood Trace Exercise 6 - trace the path of a drop of blood from just
after it leaves the heart until it reaches small intestine.
22
Next Lab…
Laboratory 5 _Blood Vessels III: Veins and Microcirculation*

Dissection kit, goggles and gloves required!

•We will continue with blood vessels by looking at all the veins
and Microcirculation in the next lab

•Good idea to look ahead at the veins we’ll be covering. See list of
veins for Laboratory 5 in the Laboratory Guide.

•Skim/read through laboratory 4 in laboratory guide and
