How to use statistics in your essay?
Interpretation of data and inequality in education

Statistics can help you form an opinion

and draw conclusions on a specific
topic. They can also strengthen the
argument in your essay and support you
in bringing across your point.
Using statistics?
Based on what you have discussed in the lectures and seminars, and read in the
course materials and beyond, you may have developed a set of initial arguments
(and assumptions or hypotheses) on a certain topic. Make a list of bullet points
for these arguments and think of the kind of data and figures that could provide
evidence for them. Then scan literature to find similar data and stats.

To show that you can reflect on an argument from different perspectives you could
think of evidence that is in favour but also evidence that is opposing the
argument.

The stats do not have to reflect exactly what you want to say. You just have to make
sure that you explicitly link their content and message to the point that you want
to make in your essay.

You can approach stats and your argumentation the other way around. Scroll and
read through reports on your topic of interest and look at the tables and figures –
what do they tell you? How are they interpreted in the text? And, most
importantly, does their message provide you with information that could be the
basis for an argument?
Remember!
When presenting findings from the statistic in your essay,
make sure that you mention the following information:
Name/topic of the study/participants
If available , the sample size, i.e. how many participants
took part
The time period at which the data was collected
Extended Criteria (approx 10-12 mins per
Essay)
