ILOCOS REGION
Region 1 or the ILOCOS REGION is
composed of four provinces:

 ILOCOS NORTE
 ILOCOS SUR
 LA UNION
 PANGASINAN

 It is located in the northwest of Luzon. In


its eastern borders are region of
Cordillera Administrative Region,
Cagayan Valley and in the South in
Central Luzon. To the west north is the
Cities & municipalities of Ilocos Norte

Dialects
 Majority of the population speaks
ILOCANO, the third largest spoken
language in the Philippines. Although
a significant number also speak
Pangasinense.
 Tagalog and English are medium

instruction in school. Ilocano is


widely used by the majority people
while Pangasinense is spoken in the
Central Towns of Pangasinan.

 The region is producer of food surplus- rice,


corn, vegetables, root crops and fruits such
as mangoes

limestone, feldspar, fruits, vegetables, fish,
poultry, and forest product such as bamboo

province. Approximately 85% of the
total population professes Roman
Catholicism, the prevailing religion in
the province. The remaining
percentage of population professes
to Protestantism, Buddhism, Iglesia
Ni Cristo, Aglipyan, Islamism,
Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seven Day
Adventist and Born Again Christians

Agriculture: rice, corn, garlic,

Capital: Vigan City
 The people are engaged farming, producing

food crops, mostly rice, corn, vegetable,


root crops, and fruit. Non- food crops
include tobacco, cotton, and tiger grass.
 Cottage industries include loom weaving,

furniture making, jewelry making, ceramics


blacksmithing, and food processing
LA UNION

Founded: 1850
Capital : SAN FERNANDO CITY
The main livelihood of the people are
hand-oven blankets, soft broom
baskets, pottery, rice wine, sugar
wine, sugarcane vinegar, wood craft,
bamboo craft, native rice cakes, dried
fish, honey, coconut, pebble stone and
mushrooms.
PANGASINAN

Founded: 1580
Capital : Lingayen
 Pangasinan is a major supplier in Luzon,
and a major producer of salt in the
Philippines. It has extensive fishpond,
mostly for raising bangus or “milkfish” along
the coasts of the Lingayen Gulf and the
south China Sea.
The major crops of Pangasinan are rice,
mangoes, corn and sugar cane.

which refers to the

that the dunes

Paoay Lake, locally


known as “Dacquel
a Danum” is a lake
in municipality of
Paoay in
northwestern Luzon
in the Philippines. It
is the largest lake in
the province of
Kapurpurawan Rock Formation
(Poblacion, Burgos, Ilocos Norte)

The Kapurpurawan
Rock Formation is
produced by the natural
process of
sedimentation. It’s name
root word “puraw” is an
Ilocano word which
means “white”.

BANTAY ABOT CAVES

Ilocos Norte is the place

Bantay Abot Cave means “
a mounatain with a hole”

ideal for swimming. You

shallow waters, though.

for a good water source

natural wonder.
The name Kaangrian
was derived from the
Ilocano word “naangri”
which means “stinky”.

8. INSARABSAB

Another must-try
grilled Ilokano
delicacy is
Insarabasab. Pork
belly or shoulder
pieces are marinated
overnight with
Sukang Iloco,
calamansi and garlic.
