Counselling??

■ Something that provides guidance, direction or advice.


■ Process of providing support and help to people to sail through tough
times.
■ Encourage people to think from different viewpoint.
■ Motivate towards the action plan.
A supportive process by a Manager to help an
employee define and work through problems
be it professional or personal(sometimes).
Purpose and Need;

■ To provide an employee with information,advice and assistance they


need to contribute fully towards achievement of objectives.
■ To improve performance of employees.
■ Two way communication process.
■ Important for management and development of employees.
■ Keep pace with dynamic business environment.
■ To wriggle out stressful situation; resulting by lack if teamwork,
slipping deadlines etc.
Condition for effective
counselling:
■ Open communication
■ Helping and understanding attitude
■ Joint goal setting
■ Proper review system
■ Emphasis on work oriented goals
Process:
— PREPARATION

■ Schedule the session and notify the employees.


■ Get copy of employee’s Job description and appropriate checklist and
evaluation form.
■ Decide what you consider important for success and other outcomes.
■ Make notes to help you through the process.
— DURING THE SESSION

■ Discuss objectives of organisation and how their


performance contribute to it.
■ Discuss items that require more effort.
■ Discuss the various tasks and level of performance
expected.
■ Competencies needed to perform the duty.
■ Ask for input from employee, idea for improvement etc.
■ Ask about employee training needs and focus on his
strengths.
—FOLLOW UP

■ Summarise the key points of the counselling on relevant firm.

■ Give a copy to employee and keep the original to use fir the next
session.
