Topic Outline

What is development and what is promises?

Different aspects of Development.
Different Goals of Development
National Development
What is Development and what it promises?

Development is a situation that can fulfil aspirations or desires. It

refers to progress or improvement in life style of the person.

Important aspects of development are :

(i) Different persons can have different developmental goals.
Eg: Some of you wants to get good marks in class 10, so that you can
opt for your preferable stream and can achieve your desire to
become a doctor or an engineer.
On the other hand some of you wants to work more harder in sports
and reaches to national level.

Now that means for different persons the meaning of development is

different as per their aspirations.
Other Aspect....

(ii) What may be development for one may not be

development for the other. It may even be destructive
for others. It is also called as conflicting developmental
goals.
For example, the construction of a flyover to reduce the
congestion and traffic jams may be a development goal
especially for the daily commuters. But for the
construction of the flyover, surrounding houses, shops,
etc. need to be demolished which may not be like by the
occupants of these shops and houses. This may not be a
development goal for them.
Different Goals of Development (Income and
Other Goals)

Development is a positive growth or change in

economical, social and political aspects of a country.
Development can be attained through:

Non Material
Material Things (like
Things (like Freedom,
money, car, equality,
house etc.) Respect etc.)

These can be attained through income These are called as goals other than income
For example: If you have good income you can get all the material
things.

(a) A worker expects a better house to live through his income.

(b) A person progresses with his income can buy a luxurious car.

On the other hand: A women expects equal treatment and respect in

the organization as compared to male in the organization she
works.

That means for Development, the attainment of all the goals are
required. You have good income but no respect in the organization
that will lower down your confidence and will affect your efficiency.

So for development people look for mix of goals.

National Development

National Development means the ability of the nation

to improve the standard of living of its citizens.

 Development promises a real growth by enhancing total

income and standard of living of people.

So, Measures or components of National development are:

(a) Economic development or rise in income of people.

(b) Social development, which includes education, health and
public services.
What is Economic Development?

Economic development means that the rate of production must be faster than the rate
of increase in population. In other words we can say that it makes people better off by
increasing their command over goods and services and by increasing the choices open
to them.

For that we should know that national income of the economy and the population of
the economy among which this income is to be distributed.

National income: is defined as the total value of all the goods and services
produced within a country together with income coming from abroad.

And the tool to measure the economic development is called as Average

Income or Per Capita Income.

Where, Per capita income of a nation = National Income

Total Population
