Birth and arrangement provider AWHONN supports the right of women to choose and
have access to various providers and arrangements for women's pregnancy, birth and
health. Women have the right to access fairly, reliably and unrelated information about
treatment options. Women can choose different settings for births such as hospitals,
independent midwife practices, clinics or homes. It is important to develop policies and
procedures that will ensure efficient running. The best examples of practice guidelines
have been developed for birth control outside the hospital or called the home birth
summit. Policies, procedures, and guidelines must also support and facilitate effective
communication and teamwork between nurse midwives, doctors, social workers and
other professionals involved in midwifery care. Researchers also found that the main
source of conflict between health care professionals related to the birth process at
home is at risk because of the lack of fluency with each scope, role and responsibility.
Effective communication is important to provide safe and appropriate services.
