Ȉ Inhumane slaughter of women all over
Pakistan in the name of
Ȉ Women are murdered just because they are
held to have brought upon the
family/clan
Ȉ All this starts with mere suspicion of a
womanǯs acts, where the family is never
quite sure of the truth
Ȉ The targeted women are first humiliated to
a great extent in the society and then they
are murdered brutally
Ȉ These honour killings are carried out in order to restore
the lost honour of the family or creed
Ȉ In Sindh it is termed as karo kari, kala kali in punjab and
tor tora in NWFP, where all these give the meaning of
   .
Ȉ The murderers are always thought of as the heroes and
saviors of the familyǯs pride
Ȉ In almost all of the cases,

using powerful influences of
their tribal leaders, giving
bribes or claiming women as
their property

Ȉ Even after the murders, the

dead bodies of the victims are
treated inhumanely, Some
are not given the final bath,
while

"
Ȉ It is noted by sociologists that honour killings do not
necessarily have to do with religion, but rather the cultures
in different regions
Ȉ The mere perception that a woman has behaved in a way
that her family is sufficient to trigger an attack
on her life
Ȉ A women may be murdered because of committing
adultery !, or disrespecting the family/clan in
any act
Ȉ Refusal to any family decision, like an arranged marriage,
may be the reason for a death
#

Ȉ Due to ignorance and low literacy rate of our rural society,
women are being slaughtered at an incredulous rate in
every province of Pakistan
Ȉ Concepts of
, and of honor, are so
deeply entrenched in the social, political and economic
fabric of Pakistan that the government mostly ignores the
regular occurrences of women being killed and maimed by
their families
Ȉ As a consequence, Women murdered in killings
are recorded as having committed suicide or died in
accidents
Ȉ Statistically, honor killings have a high level of support in
Pakistan's rural society, despite widespread condemnation
from human rights groups
Ȉ A severe lack of proper implementation of laws and
assures that men who commit honor killings are not given
lighter sentences
Ȉ And because of these

 Women of Pakistan are
in an unfair disadvantage and inferior position, often at the
mercy of men to prove their innocence

Deaths of young women who

are murdered or driven
to suicide by continuous
harassment and torture by
husbands and in-laws in an effort

Ȉ Dowry is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings
to her husband in marriage
Ȉ Originally, the purpose of a dowry was to provide seed
money or property for the establishment of a new
household, as a gift
Ȉ To help a husband feed and protect his family, and to give
the wife and children some support if he were to die
Ȉ K

Muslims of the sub continent, who later came to Pakistan,
brought this menace of a custom along with them

%
Ȉ Although asking for and giving dowry is considered
punishable all over Pakistan, but is still practiced at large
Ȉ The family of the bride, in order to preserve their ego and
honour are bound to give dowry, and if they fail, the bride
commits suicide

Ȉ The poor brides who cannot afford to bless their in-laws
with dowry, are tortured and threatened
#

Ȉ Most of these suicides are by hanging, poisoning or by fire
and these deaths are then reported as mere

Ȉ Dowry deaths are reported in various South
Asian countries such as India,
, and Bangladesh
Ȉ In
, these deaths are happening at an incredulous
rate, the reports show that there were about 8172 dowry
death cases registered in Pakistan in 2008 have increased
over the decade
Ȉ Mostly these deaths/suicides take place in the rural areas
of the Pakistan among poor and illiterate people
Ȉ Girls are forced to bring dowry with them or they are
simply turned down
Ȉ This shear cruelty against the poor women of Pakistan is
enough to drive them to suicide
Ȉ Thus, , a woman must belong to a rich family, in
order to get married in Pakistan. It turns this once helping
and noble custom into a

Ȉ Brutal acts of domestic violence against women usually
carried out by male members of a family or clan
Ȉ Men beat up their wives and family females on quarrels
and family matters which end up in a womanǯs death
Ȉ Women are tortured and harassed in many possible
ways, some to such extent that they often commit suicide
Ȉ Includes acid throwing and some really gruesome and
horrible ways of murder
Ȉ Almost all the victims of this violence have an unpleasant
past relationship with their in laws
Ȉ The brideǯs murder is planned by all the in laws
Ȉ Women are blasted off by sabotaging a kitchen stove, and
then the story is covered up by a calling it an

Ȉ As a result almost the whole body of the victim is left

burned, her face damaged beyond recognition and with a
tiny chance of survival
Ȉ The women who survive
these burns become

 , they
hide themselves from the
world, too embarrassed and
even to show their
remaining face.
Ȉ Scared especially when they
realize that this can happen to
them again, because

r

Ȉ Usually the reason behind a brideǯs murder is the dispute

over
Ȉ Husband might suspect his wife for having a relation with
anyone, or she might fail to bless him with a male child
Ȉ Husband, in many cases, turned out to be an addict or a
gambler and treated his wife cruelly
Ȉ Women may be burned down because they could not fulfill
some of their menǯs wild desires
Ȉ An important reason behind these acts are to cut out the
middle man (p woman in the present case)
Ȉ Men who do not want to live with their present wife for any
reason, tend to finish her off. For this they either drench her
in acid or set her to fire.
Ȉ Slaughtering a newly wed just because the girl was not
pretty enough for the groom, the marriage was arranged
and the groom liked some one else

Ȉ Women, not just in far away rural areas, but all over
Pakistan are victim to acid throwing
Ȉ Perpetrators of these attacks throw acid at their victims,
burning them and damaging the skin, sometimes even
dissolving the bones within
Ȉ Mostly the

, making her
short remaining life miserable
Ȉ The consequences of these attacks include permanent
blindness and horrible scarring of the face and body
Ȉ There is a high survival rate amongst victims of acid
attacks, which is the main goal of the person who attacks,
so as

 &

Ȉ Consequently the victim is faced with long term surgical
treatment, as well as psychological and emotional
challenges
Ȉ Depression and anxiety are common amongst all victims
with large burn injuries
Ȉ Many survivors continue to have vivid memories of the
incident which cause great levels of distress, especially
when they know their attackers are free to attack again
"
Ȉ Acid throwing attacks have been used as a form of revenge
and proposals of marriage
Ȉ Violent men who can not reach the women, who hurt them
by any mean, tend to make her life miserable forever by
throwing acid on them
Ȉ Refusal to give dowry, turning down a marriage proposal
or humiliating the pride and honour of males can be a
cause
Ȉ Violating the dress code of the family/clan can be a reason
Ȉ Acid is thrown on the victimsǯ unveiled faces by male
fanatics who considered them improperly dressed
Ȉ Attacks or threats of attacks on women who fail to wear
hijab or were otherwise "immodestly dressed" have been
reported in the country too

Ȉ Important factors preventing women from reporting rape
include womenǯs own feelings of disgrace and shame
Ȉ The perception of male relatives that their own honour has
been violated, resulting in more physical abuse of women
and even murder.

Ȉ The

carries a tazir penalty for
the perpetrator of 25 years in prison and 30 lashes
Ȉ There is also a more severe punishment, but, as
noted, this has never been carried out
Ȉ However these penalties offer little protection to women
since, in practice, a woman who has been raped and makes
an accusation of zina-bil-jabr is laying herself open to

, and thus to conviction for zina
Ȉ Men are more confident of getting away with raping
women since the introduction of the * # , and
this may have caused a rise in rape

Ȉ The crimes against women are ghastly and horrible in
nature
Ȉ There is no sense of security among most women in
Pakistan
Ȉ The crimes are highly under-reported
Ȉ Government and authorities are doing almost nothing in
prevention
Ȉ This violence is strengthening its roots with the passage of
time

Ȉ As these killings mostly happen in rural areas of our country, where

literacy rate is almost zero, it should the first priority to

. That will result in rural women being less
scared by their family men, and hence women will not hesitate to raise
their voice against them.
Ȉ Organizations 4:# ! for prevention of such killings
should be made.
Ȉ Students can spread awareness about these devastating
matters to their fellows.
Ȉ Media can play an important role in spreading the untold
stories of these killings, which will bring awareness among
the masses.
Ȉ Separate investigation wings should be made for these
crimes.
Ȉ Our laws are ,in a way or two, actually helping the people
responsible for such inhumane acts, they should be
changed a bit.
Ȉ Police and all the law enforcement agencies of Pakistan
should stop being

and
take these matters seriously with iron hands.
Ȉ As most part of Muslim community goes to mosques and
Islamic scholars for advices and help in daily life matters,
so these " r a great deal by
spreading awareness among people about these killings.
Ȉ Besides society, our Government should take some drastic
measures to suppress Feudalism in rural areas, because
feudal lords make people in those areas live in the Dz'

dz like situation.
Ȉ And finally, the women victimized
of these crimes should be treated
properly,
Ȉ The should be given the

to recover from the
shock and depression
