MALAYSIA’S INVOLVEMENT IN US FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

MAI SYAHEERA MEOR SHAARI

NURUL DIANA RUSLAN
WHAT IS USFTA???

• It is a free-trade agreement (FTA) between Malaysia and the

United States.

• FTA is an agreement made between two or more countries

under which countries involved are given preferential market
access.

• It is all about securing market share, zero tariffs on goods and

having a strong market between companies in Malaysia and US.
MALAYSIA‘S OBJECTIVE

Malaysia's objectives in negotiating FTAs are to:

o Seek better market access by addressing tariffs and non-tariff measures

o Further facilitate and promote trade, investment and economic

development

o Enhance the competitiveness of Malaysian exporters

o Build capacity in specific targeted areas through technical cooperation and

collaboration
HOW BUSSINESS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE FROM THE USFTA

• Expand and penetrate overseas market.

• Advantage of duty elimination or substantial reduction as they now have an

edge over their competitors from countries not enjoying preferential treatment.

• Enable Malaysian industries to source inputs at more competitive prices.

• Expand its services and products into third countries through partnerships with
enterprises from FTA members.

• Offer trade facilitation measures for industries to expand trade, as well as

capacity building to improve and enhance their competitiveness.
GOVERNMENT PROCUREMENT

• Malaysian government buy anything, this is known as

government procurement

• Malaysia has led developing countries at the WTO to

stop government to open up to foreigners
MALAYSIA UNLIKELY TO GET MORE
INVESTMENT

• Malaysia may want more investment from

Americans.

• According to World Bank & United Nations

Conference on Trade & Development, there is no
proof that stronger investor protection increase
investment by foreigners.
CAN MALAYSIA INCREASE EXPORTS TO THE
US UNDER USFTA?

• Malaysian companies may think that they have

opportunity to export more to USA if they signed the
USFTA because the USA will lower the tariffs on
products coming from Malaysia.
IMPACT ON GOVERNMENT REVENUE

• The revenue of Malaysian Government is losing.

• USA is the second largest import into

Malaysia. If all taxes on American product fall
to zero, that is a lot of revenue the Malaysian
government losing.
CONCLUSION

• As a conclusion Malaysian government should not

sign the U.S. Free Trade Agreement.

• Malaysia are doing well economically even though

without USFTA because Malaysia already has a trade
surplus with the US.
