Microbiological Process

Optimization of Biogas Synthesis

: A Genomic Approach

Center for The Aplication of Isotopes and Radiation Technology

Introduction
 Biogas is the main product of Anaerobic digestion.
 Anaerobic digestion is a multi-step biological
process where the organic carbon is converted to its
most oxidized (CO2) and most reduced (CH4) state.

Organic Polymer CH4 + CO2

 The process involves several groups of microbia

which makes it complex and sensitive, and makes it
a valid subject for control and optimisation.

Specific research questions
 Improving efficiency of hydrolysis by inoculation
 Key organisms of hydrolysis/acidogenesis (depending on feedstock)

 Recovery of methanogenesis by pre-adapted consortia

 Aceticlastic vs. hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis – which one performs

better, under which conditions, and which groups of archaea

 Key organisms of acetogenesis, role of homoacetogens

 Competition for hydrogen and organic substrates (e.g. by SRB)

 Stability under high ammonia load, low pH, high VFA, high organic load,

short retention times …

 Optimization of trace element supply (additives vs. substrate mixture

optimization)
 Single stage vs. two stage processes

 Mesophilic vs. thermophilic processes

 .......

Why using genomic approach?
 The majority of microbia from the natural
environment resists cultivation in the laboratory:
Great Plate Count Anomaly.

 For soil environment, rate of recovery is at much

30 % of total microbes.

“Di sisi-Nya segala anak kunci yang ghaib, tiadalah yang mengetahui kecuali Dia sendiri.
Dia mengetahui apa-apa yang ada di daratan dan di lautan. Tiada gugur sehelai daun
kayu pun, melainkan Dia mengetahuinya, dan tiada sebuah biji dalam gelap gulita bumi
dan tiada pula benda yang basah dan yang kering, melainkan semuanya dalam Kitab
yang terang” (Al An’am:59) “

Thank you, May God Bless all of us.
