WHAT IS TRADITIONAL GRAMMAR?

• School grammar is traditional grammar.

• It is concerned primarily with correctness and
the categorical names for the words that make
up sentences.
• Traditional grammar is prescriptive because it
focuses on the distinction between :
- what some people do with the language.
- what they ought to do with it.
FORM AND FUNCTION OF TRADITIONAL
GRAMMAR
• Grammar deals with the structure and analysis
of sentences.
• Grammar must address language on two
levels ; form and function.
• Sentences are made up of individual words,
and these words fall into certain grammatical
categories.
WEAKNESS OF TRADITIONAL GRAMMAR

• Traditional grammar is adequate and full of

shortcomings that paved the way for so many
models of modern grammar. So, it provides a
poor model for the grammars of languages that
differ from them.
• It does not, adequately distinguish between all
the linguistic levels.
• It is normative and prescriptive rather than
explicit and descriptive.
