Cement
any of various calcined mixtures of clay and limestone, usually mixed with water and
sand, gravel, etc., to form concrete, that are used as a building material.
any of various soft, sticky substances that dry hard or stonelike, used especially for
mending broken objects or for making things adhere.
Uses of Cement

Some of the numerous functions of cement are given below.

 It is used in mortar for plastering, masonry work, pointing, etc.

 It is used for making joints for drains and pipes.

 It is used for water tightness of structure.

Uses of Cement
 It is used in concrete for laying floors, roofs and constructing lintels, beams, stairs, pillars
etc.

 It is used where a hard surface is required for the protection of exposed surfaces of
structures against the destructive agents of the weather and certain organic or inorganic
chemicals.

 It is used for precast pipes manufacturing, piles, fencing posts etc.

Uses of Cement
 It is used in the construction of important engineering structures such as bridges, culverts,
dams, tunnels, lighthouses etc.

 It is used in the preparation of foundations, watertight floors, footpaths etc.

 It is employed for the construction of wells, water tanks, tennis courts, lamp posts,
telephone cabins, roads etc.
Raw Materials of Cement
 Lime Component

• Limestone - calcium carbonate of all geological formations qualifies for the production of Portland
cement.

• Chalk - characterized by a soft earthy texture

• Marl - limestone with admixtures of silica, clay substance, and iron oxide
Raw Materials of Cement

 Clay component - formed by the weathering of alkali and alkaline earth containing
aluminum silicates and of their chemical conversion products, mainly feldspar and mica.
Raw Materials of Cement

 Silica sand - is quartz that over time, through the work of water and wind, has been
broken down into tiny granules. Industrial sand is a term normally applied to high
purity silica sand products with closely controlled sizing.
Raw Materials of Cement
 Iron concentrate - produced from the magnetite iron ore in the beneficiation process and is used for
the production of pellets for blast furnaces and sinter. The concentrates are non-toxic, non-flammable
and non-explosive.
Development of Cement
-dating from around 5600BC and Israel (7000BC)

slowed in the Middle Ages, with significant information being lost

In the late 1700s and early 1800s a great number of novel cement patents and
formulations were devised

the great potential of cement and concrete for modern engineering is realized by James Smeaton

A string of others were awarded patents for novel cementitious materials in the coming years

For much of the 1800s, Roman cement dominated

In present, Portland cement is still the industry standard cement
