Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, Addison Wesley Objectives of the course: ● To gain an understanding and appreciation of the breadth and depth of the field of manufacturing and the related processes. ● To learn and apply the basic terminology associated with these field. ● To become familiar with the basic principles and theories used to describe the manufacturing processes. ● To compare the advantages and limitations of manufacturing processes. ● To develop an ability to solve homework and design projects in a team environment. Course learning outcomes: ● CO1 – able to understand the big picture of manufacturing in the form of manufacturing efficiency, competitiveness, current trend and the importance to understand customer needs ● CO2 – Able to choose the right manufacturing process based on the requirement of the product and to compare the advantages and limitations of manufacturing processes. ● CO3 – Able to use appropriate tools for quality controls. ● CO4 – Able to develop an ability to tackle issues related to manufacturing individually and in a team environment. Topics: ● Chapter 1 – Introduction to Manufacturing ● Chapter 2 – Manufacturing Aspects ● Chapter 3 – Non-metallic Material Processes ● Chapter 5 – Metal Forming Processes ● Chapter 6 – Non-traditional Processes ● Chapter 7 – Microelectronic Devices and Micro Manufacturing Assessments: ● Tests (2) – 40% ● Group Project (2 members) – 15% ● Assignment – 5% ● Final – 40% ● Total – 100% ● ● Attendance 80% in order to enter Final Exam. Group Project: ● You are a group of engineers from the production line. Your company decides to produce a new product. In order to speed up the product development process, it was suggested in the meeting that reverse engineering is adopted. ● Suggestion of component category: – Motorcycle component, bicycle component, machine component, automotive component – The report: ● Each group of two members is required to prepare a report which includes these items: – Detail specifications regarding the components, material, dimensions, finishing, heat treatment needed etc. – Appropriate engineering drawing of the components – Explanations on manufacturing processes that are required to produce the component from the beginning to the end. Suggest 1 alternative process suitable and the differences (advantages and disadvantages from the original one). Provide a flow chart to illustrate the process sequence. – Explanations on the machines and tools involve. – Explanations on equipment and/or processes involve to determine product’s quality. – Minutes of every meetings and discussions, job distribution and gantt chart/ work plan. – Report must be in A4 sized and properly bind submitted in the 13th week 31st March 2011.
