SCOPE and

DELIMITATION
of the STUDY
The SCOPE describes the coverage of the
study. It specifies what is covered in terms
of concept, number of subjects or the
population included in the study, as well as
the timeline when the study was
conducted.
DELIMIT by citing factors or variables that are
not to be included and the boundary terms of
time frame, number of subjects, participants or
respondents who are excluded. Specify that
which you will not deal within the study
This section discusses the parameters of the research
in paragraph. It answers the basic questions:
• WHAT – the topic of investigation and the variables
included
• WHERE – the venue or the setting of the research
• WHEN – the timeframe by which the study was conducted
This section discusses the parameters of the research in
paragraph. It answers the basic questions:
• WHY – the general objectives of the research
• WHO – the subject of the study, the population and the sampling
• HOW – the methodology of the research which may include the
research design, methodology and the research instrument

Scope and delimitations are two elements of a
research paper or thesis. The SCOPE of a study
explains the extent to which the research area
will be explored in the work and specifies the
parameters within which the study will be
operating.
For example, let's say a researcher wants
to study the impact of mobile phones on
behavior patterns of elementary school
children. However, it is not possible for the
researcher to cover every aspect of the
topic.
So, the scope will have to be narrowed down to a
certain section of the target population. In this case,
the scope might be narrowed down to a group of 50
children in grades 3-5 of one specific school. Their
behavior patterns in school may have been observed
for a duration of 6 months. These would form the
delimitations of the study.
Thus, delimitations are the characteristics that limit
the scope and describe the boundaries of the study,
such as the sample size, geographical location or
setting in which the study takes place, population
traits, etc. Additionally, the researcher might also
choose to use some research tools and methodologies
to collect data but not others.
These delimitations might be imposed for practical
reasons, such as lack of time or financial resources to
carry out a more thorough investigation. The
delimitation section of the study should explain why
specific choices were made while others were
excluded and how this might affect the outcome of
the research.
In the example mentioned, the researcher might
state why he/she chose to study a sample population
of 50 students, why he/she selected students from
Grades 3-5 and not grades 1-2, and why he/she chose
students of Billabong Elementary Public School over
other schools.

The research was conducted at STI College Las
Piñas. This study limit its coverage on the Grade 11
and 12 Accountancy, Business and Management
students first quarter final grade. The study focuses on
the current Grade 11 and 12 ABM students of the
present year S.Y 2017-2018.
QUIZ #____ DATE: ____
Directions: Indicate the scope
and delimitation in the following
samples.
1. The study described novice out-of-field
teachers who are teaching science in the public
SHS; the challenges that they encounter and their
coping mechanisms. The sampling was purposive,
and the participants were out-of-field that are
novice SHS teachers of Eastern Samar.
The limitation of this study is that the
qualitative data analysis and coding were done by
the researcher solely.
This study focused on the Effects of Mentoring
Program on Adversity Quotient® of Selected Freshmen
College Students of First Asia Institute of Technology and
Humanities during the Second Semester of Academic
Year 2008 - 2009. The respondents of the study were
composed of 181 randomly selected college students
which comprise 25% of the total population. The results
of this study are applicable only to the respondents of
this study and should not be used as a measure of the
effect of mentoring program on the Adversity Quotient®
of the students who do not belong to the population of
this study.
This study focuses on the effects of stress and depression in
grade 9 and grade 10 students. The data collection will be
conducted to 10% of the total population in grade 9 and grade 10
of Nicolas L. Galvez Memorial Integrated National High school,
school year 2017-2018 who will represent the population. This
study will not cover other problems that are not consider as one
of the stress and depression. The other students which do not fall
as part of grade 9 and grade 10 students are not within the scope
of this research. The study would be done through the utilization
of questionnaire to the students as a survey and reference. By
their strategy the researchers will be able to know the effects of
stress and depression to grade 9 and grade 10 students.
