Kinds of Democracy:

• Historically,there are two kinds of democracies.

• 1. Direct Democracy.
• 2.Indirect Democracy.
• Direct democracy : It is also known as participatory democracy.In such
kind of democracy, people express their will on public matters
directly.Such kind of democracy could exist in states with small
territory or area,with small population,where people could easily got
togather and could share views.
• But such gathering is not possible in large country-states,as existed in
modern times.
Historically such states existed in ancient Greece,called polis or city-
state.
Direct democracy is not possible in modern territorial and densly
populated states.However,in Switzerlands ,in some of its cantons,this
practice of direct participation of the people is still practicing.Adult
population of these cantons assemble at one place on Sunday
afternoon,and decide there common affairs and adopt their policies by
voice votes by loudly expressing,Ayes and Nayes.
Indirect or Representative Democracy.
Representative democracy is a modern kind of democracy,in this type
of democracy,people elect their representatives,sent them to the
central legislative assembly,where they make laws and administer the
country.
Representative democracy is ensured trough universal
frunchise,popular electorates and frequent elections.Such democracy
demanded the election of all public officials like the governors,law-
makers,and even judges,but practically only the law-makers are
elected.This system has its drawbacks,therefore,some devices of
direct democracy such as referendum,initiative and recallare intruduced.
Aspects of Democracy.
three aspects are important.
1. Political Democracy.
2, Economic Democracy.
3. Social Democracy.
Political Democracy:It means the sovereignty of the people.People
express this soverein powers through elections.It also means that every
adult citizen must have one vote,have the right to stand for election
and hold public office ,if qualified for it.Right of the freedom of opinion,
speech and association.
Political democracy provide a chance to the people to make choices,i.e
who should rule them.
Economic Democracy.This type of democracy exists in communist
states,ITstands on the principle of “From each according to his
capacity , to each according to his needs.”
Economic democracy also means that every citizen has the right to
work,earn spends,rest, leisure and enjoyment of life.
Social Democracy.It is based on the principle of social justice,social
justice exists where there is no prejudices of class,caste ,colour, or
creed.Absence of descrimination 0n the bases of wealth,birth,and
social status.All citizens ,rich or poor,official or not,are equal and should
be treated equally.
In such type of democracy Man is valued as man and the dignity of man
is considered as prior .Absence of discrimination is the indicator of
social democracy.
