• FRM Designation consists of :

• 2 Exams also called 2 parts
• Sequential program: Candidates have to pass Part 1 before Part 2
• Self study driven, based on core reading material provided by GARP
• Part 1 : Foundation
• Focus is on the knowledge of risk management techniques, understanding of the
financial products & their valuation
• Part 2 : Risk Measurement and Management
• Focus is on application of the basics in measuring the risks and management

• Exam Type
• Both parts are 100% multiple choice
• No Negative marking
• Each part has exams of 4 Hours
• Part 1 has 100 questions and Part 2 has 80 questions

• Eligibility
• Graduate from any discipline
• Final Year students may also register to give the Part I exams
• No Work Experience requirements for appearing for the exams
• Minimum of 24 months relevant experience to receive FRM designation
• A 5 year window after passing the exam to gain the work experience

 09 CFA Vs FRM
• Work profile
• CFA is wide based however focus is on valuation and portfolio management
and is compared to MBA in finance. FRM has risk management focus and is
much narrower in scope, however learning is applicable to various profiles.
• Curriculum
• CFA curriculum is more mature and has focused content where as FRM
course material is a collection of various chapters by different authors
• Industry Recognition
• CFA is the only kind of course and is more recognized in the job market as
compared to FRM. PRM is another risk certification in the industry. GARP is
trying to create awareness about the certification among the employers.
• Time to Pass
• CFA requires long term commitment of 3 years whereas FRM can be
completed in only 1 year.
• Difficulty Level
• FRM has more quantitative aspect and many may find it to be difficult as
compared to CFA, but since it does not have accounting aspects it may be
easier for some. Time dedication for FRM Part 1 can be slightly lesser than
that of CFA Level 1.
