WHY RIGHTS

sunil
Why Rights?
 ‘Cause i am human and have decided to
stay in a social manner
 ‘Cause i pay my taxes
 ‘Cause i follow rules
 ‘Cause i allow government even to arrest
me or kill me and my family if I go against
society
 ‘Cause i decided not to be an animal or to
live with violence
Why Rights?
 'Cause the moment i am born i am an
Indian citizen
 'Cause the constitution of India allows me
many rights
 ‘Cause the Govt has signed many
agreements in the world to respect human
rights (UDHR), to respect women’s rights
(CEDAW, ICPD, etc), to respect child
rights, etc. and gets world aid based on
these declarations
Why Rights?
 ‘Cause India is no longer poor – it is the
4th Largest economy in the world (PPP)
basis
 ‘Cause we have 4 of the richest 10 people
in the world – more than even USA!
 ‘Cause we are rich enough to send a
spacecraft to the moon
Why Rights?
 ‘Cause we are rich enough to have nuclear
weapons
 ‘Cause we are the largest importer of
weapons in the world
 ‘Cause our defence budget crossed Rs 1
lakh crore (Rs 10,00,00,00,00,000)
 ‘Cause each of our fighter
planes costs RS 300 crores
each and we HAVE to buy at least 12 at a
time)
Why Rights?
 ‘Cause we should be ashamed that even
the poorest countries around us and those
who were liberated after us have better h
ealth and education
!
Gandhiji’s Talisman

I will give you a talisman…

Recall the face of the poorest
and the weakest man whom
you may have seen, and ask
yourself if the step you
contemplate is going to be of
any use to him. Will he gain
anything by it? Will it restore
him to a control over his own
life and destiny? Then you will
find your doubts and yourself
melting away…
Why
a Human Rights Approach to
Development?
 Every human being has rights
 All human beings have right to live with
dignity & without fear
 Protection of weakest main objective of
human institutions – formal & informal

The RBA is a process of enabling &

empowering those not enjoying their
human rights to claim their rights
