UNITED NATIONS

 The United Nations (UN) is an international


organization established in 1945 to promote
international cooperation.
 A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations
 At its founding, the UN had 51 member states;
there are now 193.
 UN headquarters are located in Manhattan, New
York City
 It is financed by assessed and voluntary
contributions from its member states.

 Purpose
To take collective measures for the prevention
and removal of threats to the peace
To develop friendly relations among nations
based on respect for the principle of equal rights
and self-determination of peoples
To achieve international cooperation in solving
international problems in economic, social,
cultural and humanitarian character and in
promoting and encouraging respect for human
rights and for fundamental freedoms for all
without distinction as to race, sex, language and
religion
