Climatology

INTRODUCTION TO COURSE OUTLINE

12th January 2008

By
Ar. Silwat Afzal
Introduction to Course Outline:

 The subject of climatology at undergraduate

level is developed to synthesize the future
architects towards, the issues of climatic
control and climate conscious design that
always enhances the capabilities of a designer
to produce better and built spaces.
………..
 In this convert era of modern construction
techniques, with modern materials and
technological advantage it is quite easier to
design buildings without any respect to climate
and its impacts on the buildings.

 For instance one can use air handling rooms &

air conditions to have comfortable air
movement.
CLIMATOLOGY……AR371
The Subject and Course is divided into 4 streams of Climatology with
respect to Architecture and Planning & Design of Built Spaces.

Climate

SITE Thermal Comfort

Solar Control
Why is it necessary to study climatology?

 The goal is basically to understand the concepts and

methodology of controlling the thermal and luminous
environment in the buildings.
 The use of all & most modern appliances to control
climate in a building requires some energy sources.
There is some cost attached to all the appliances and
energy sources.
 Thus for developing countries like Pakistan and other
third world countries climatic conscious design for
buildings is the only option available for economical and
comfortable built environments.
Is it economy in construction cost, or
aesthetics…………… ?

 The major benefit one  For architects aesthetic

gets from a climatically plays a major role in the
designed building is design process!
saving or economy in environmentally related
construction cost, elements of design also
economy of fuel, eco of enhances & settles in the
maintenance cost and urban fabric.
renewal & replacement  Example: that of
(eg- color of paint & vernacular architecture.
texture of building).
Need to study Vernacular architecture……..

 Vernacular architecture differs from one region to another what is

e.g. use of wind catcher’s in Thatta, to get benefit from wind and
address this issue to hot humid climate.

 As Banister Fleture says:

“That among the major influences on architecture one of the influences
is climate for which there is a need to study climatology”.

 And the way different civilizations and cultures use climate in the
orientation of their buildings, use of different building materials to
address climatic issues and development of open spaces in and
around the buildings to protect human beings from harsh weather
conditions.
comfortable architecture…………..

 “The most important function of an

architect is to create a comfortable
architecture, comfortable to the widest
sense of the word, and related to the
economic constraints and technological
limitations of the society in which he lives”.
