THE VERB
Grammar:

The classification of verbs
1. According to their form:
- Regular: -ed (want – wanted - wanted; believe – believed - believed; play – played -
played);
- Irregular verbs: (drink-drank-drunk; begin – began – begun; come – came – come);
2. According to their complementation:
- Transitive ( I have not accepted his offer yet.)
- Intransitive ( Our neighbor are always quarreling at night. )
3. According to the occurrence in the progressive aspect, verbs can be
- Dynamic ( My mother is talking on the phone now.)
- Static ( The food tastes great.)
The Present Simple
It expresses:
- a general action, a program, an action that we do regularly, and every day
program;
- general truth, laws of nature;
Adverbs:
- every day, year;
- usually;
- never;
- sometimes;
- always;
- often;
- seldom (from time to time);
■ AFFIRMATIVE:
S + AUXILIARY VERB + MAIN VERB + ( -ES/ -S)
do base III – he, she, it
Verbs receiving the ending –es:
- O: go, do;
- Ch: watch – she watches; catch – it catches;
- Sh: wash – he washes; brush – he brushes;
- Ss: pass - it passes; cross – she crosses;
- Z: buzz - it buzzes.
You work every day.
He watches Tv every evening.
INTERROGATIVE

SPELLING

■ Verbs ending in Y + ( -S/ - ES)


1. Vowel + y + s
to play – he plays
to study – studies
2. Consonant + y es
to cry – he cries
to study - he studies
Present Tense Continuous

It expresses:
1. – an action going at the moment of speaking;
2. – a present action which lasts for a longer period of time; it’s a continuous action at the
moment of speaking;
3. – a repeated action in the present that irritates the speaker ( used with the adverb always)
Adverbs:
(right) now, at present, at the moment, at the present moment, etc.
AFFIRMATIVE

1. I am studying English now.
2. I am following a French course next year.
3. He is always calling me late at night,
INTERROGATIVE

■ TO BE (present) + S+VB + ( - ING)
