Core Boards
Main Functions

•MSS Controller to manage all the peripheral modules. MSS has a one layer control
architecture implemented by a microprocessor acting as Equipment Controller and Physical
Machine Controller.

•Layer-2 Ethernet Switch performing Cross-Connect function between all the

peripherals and Ethernet ports. The switch assures to the system a complete
interconnections between all the boards connected into MSS node.

•Clock Reference Unit (CRU) with main function to generate the Network Element Clock.
Ethernet interfaces can be optionally used or as user interfaces or to connect up to 6 MPT
(Outdoor unit)

Core-E Board
Overview
The Core-E board is supported since the 9500 MPR Release R1.2 (2010)

The core board could be protected through a Core “Spare” (same PN of Core “Main”) that can be added to provide
Control platform redundancy and protection of aggregated data.

The Core-E card has two roles, main and spare Core-E.

The main Core-E performs key node management, control functions, provisioning, configuration management and
cross-connection matrix. The matrix is a standard Ethernet switch based on VLAN.

The main Core-E card is required.

The spare Core-E card provides aggregate traffic and control platform protection. The spare Core-E card is
optional.

The guaranteed MTBF for the Core-E is 68.7 years

CorEvo
Overview
The Core-E board is supported since the 9500 MPR Release R6.0 (2015)
The CorEvo card has two roles, main and spare.
The main CorEvo performs key node management, control functions, provisioning, configuration management, and
cross-connection matrix. The matrix is a standard Ethernet switch based on VLAN.

The CorEvo-10G board also carries a micro SD Card(*), which holds the terminal SW Configuration and Node License.
The main CorEvo card is required.

The spare CorEvo card provides aggregate traffic and control platform protection.
The spare CorEvo card is optional.

The guaranteed MTBF for the CorEvo is 112 years(*)

Interfaces details
SFP Synch IN/OUT
MSS can deliver or receive frequency synchronization to/from an external device,
like a BTS, via a dedicated SFP. This dedicated SFP can be plugged into CorEvo(*)

Fan Alarm Evo

On top of the traditional Fan Alarm Card that’s still supported by the CorEvo, a new “Fan Alarm Evo” with
extended functions is supported. It provides 8 housekeeping IN and 3 housekeeping OUT signals. 6 leds
provide equipment alarms and battery/fan module status

CorEvo
Key Features
1588v2 Transparent Clock
•1588v2 TC needed to compensate asymmetricities
•1588v2 TC is supported on 9500 MPR CorEvo board: the synch packets correction field is
updated with the transit time, so the PDV normally caused by internal queues is removed.
•If 1588v2 TC is enabled and the forwarding path includes a CorEvo, the event message is time
stamped by the CorEvo switch regardless of whether the ingress or egress port supports
1588.

1588v2 Boundary Clock

•1588BC needed to further filter remaining pdv and scalability
•BC available in CorEvo

Evolution to SDN L3 VPN

•CorEvo HW capabilities are paving the way to SDN evaluation by the means of SW upgrade
enabling L3 VPN services over MPLS dataplane.

Core-E to CorEvo
Smooth Upgrade

A very simple and automated procedure (Backup/Restore like)

to be followed to upgrade from Core-E to CorEvo board.

All licenses will be automatically upgraded during the migration

procedure.

The procedure is documented detailing all the needed pre-

requirements, steps and expected results.

The procedure presents a very limited risk and rollback is

always possible in case of trouble.
