PINANG ASSIGNMENT 1 MATHEMATICS (QS 016) 2010/2011 F3P8 GROUP 1 MOHD FARID BIN SAFAR MOHD FITRI AFIQ BIN MUSTAFFA TAN WEE KEM AFIFAH BT MOHD ABDOH NURHAFIZA BT MOHD SABRI INTRODUCTION He has commonly been given credit for discovering the theorem in geometry that state that : “in a right-angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle), c, is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides, b and a—that is, a2 + b2 = c2” THE MATHEMATICIAN Pythagoras This famous mathematician and well-known as the “father of numbers” was Pythagoras. He was born around 570 BC that is around 2750 years ago. He was a strict vegetarian. Pythagoras, the Pythais was born on the island of Samos, Greece. As a child, he spent his early days in Samos but travelled widely with his father. He is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. CONTRIBUTION TO THE MATHEMATICS AND MODERN WORLD Although Pythagoras was not the best known Greek mathematician, but he made many contributions to the way we use math today. Pythagoras is credited with inventing the Pythagorean theorem. He also founded the Pythagorean brotherhood. Pythagoras also invented a lot of number patterns. Also, he was a Greek religious leader who made huge developments in math that may have Pythagoras of Samos is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of modern mathematics yet we know relatively few facts of his life. Probably his most popular theorem is the Pythagoras Theorem. This is used for a right angled triangle. Since the fourth century AD, Pythagoras has commonly been given credit for
discovering the Pythagoras theorem, a theorem in geometry that states that in a
right-angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle), c, is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides, b and a—that is, a2 + b2 = c2. This theorem enables you to find the length of the third side of a right triangle when only knowing the length of two sides. This is considered his most important contribution to modern Mathematics Pythagoras also invented the five regular solids. It is thought that Pythagoras himself knew how to construct the first three but it is unlikely that he knew how to construct the other two. This society defined figurate numbers to be the number of dots in certain geometrical configurations (Mathematical Structures for Computer Science, Pg. 145) Of Pythagoras's actual work nothing is known. His school practiced secrecy and communalism making it hard to distinguish between the work of Pythagoras and that of his followers. Certainly his school made outstanding contributions to mathematics, and it is possible to be fairly certain about some of Pythagoras's mathematical contributions. Pythagoras's accomplishments have changed the math world tremendously and his contributions to the math world . Besides that, Pythagoras found the relationship between music and math. He had invented many number patterns. He believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations. He generalized this from observing music, mathematics and astronomy. He first noticed that different harmonies were made from different lengths in the ratio of whole numbers, and that this observation could be extended to different instruments. He associated mathematical discoveries involving the musical intervals of the octave, fourth, and fifth string. He further realized that if a string with the same degree of tension was reduced to half, when plucked the pitch of the shorter string was exactly one octave higher than that of the original string. The ratios of the lengths of the stretched strings and the pitch of the vibration could be expressed in the numbers from 1 to 4, thus 1:2 for the sound of octave, 2:3 for the sound of the fifth string, and 3:4 for the fourth string. The vibrating strings produce harmonious tones. Moreover, legend says that Pythagoras found the relationship one day when he was walking past a blacksmith shop and heard the hammers hit the anvil. Pythagoras heard the hammers hit the anvil he noticed that each hammer made a different sound according to the weight of the hammer. So, the weight of the hammer (i.e. number) decides the sound the hammer will make. What Pythagoras found out was that math controls the tone of music. Pythagoras was also credited for devising the “tetractys”. Tetractys is a triangular figure consisting of ten points arranged in four rows: one, two, three and four points in a row. Another important discovery was found in observing that a square is not a rational multiple of its side and from this fact, the existence of irrational numbers were discovered. Pythagoreans' belief that whole numbers and their ratios could account for geometric properties and the Greek mathematics in general was disturbed by the new findings. The Pythagoras’ theorem is named after Pythagoras, who tradition is credited with its discovery and proof, although it is often argued that knowledge of the theorem predates him. Nowadays, the Pythagoras’ Theorem were widely used today. Mostly the theorem used in engineering and mathematics. In engineering, the theorem are useful to calculate the degree of stability. Most of the equation are derived to achieve the answer. In mathematics, the theorem also used in scalar and vector quantity. To find the answer and to equate the question. In education, learning of Pythagoras’ theorem helps students to understanding the right-angled triangle in any circumstances. There are not much information of Pythagoras related to mathematics because Pythagoras also philosoper CONTRIBUTION TO THE MODERN WORLD Pythagoras’s theories have brought about many positive impacts on the past and present world. Even today, his theories are being applied in many aspects from our everyday life to the architecture fields and even arts. Many things would not have been made possible today if it was not for Pythagoras whom long ago greatly impacted the world of mathematics. In our everyday life, one of the most common and effect of Pythagoras theory is that now we are able to accurately estimate the type of ladder you will need to get to your roof. Besides that, his theory also allows us to calculate the distance between two places and also find the length of displacement. Furthermore, in our everyday life of sports, Pythagoras theory can be used in determining how far the catcher has to throw the baseball to get from the home plate to the second base. Pythagoras’ theory also enables us to determine the difference between people in term of height, weight and age. In the field of architecture, the layout of tiling for floors can now be easily calculated thanks to Pythagoras theory. Some builders can use the Pythagoras theory to find the missing tiles. Length of means and pillars can also be measured by using his theory. Pythagoras also greatly admires the arts and thought that without art and math, life would abnormal and harder to live. Pythagoras had created triangle and the ideas on how to utilize it. These days, artist use triangle as a piece in a mosaic or the design in drawings. Lastly, some of the other effects of Pythagoras theories on the world today are the triangulation theory which enables one to locate a location where the emergency calls were made. For an example, an ambulance is able to locate the house where accidents occur after calls are being made. Besides that, the Pythagoras theorem is not only essential in the 2-d geometry but also essential in the 3-d geometry as development of video games environments today are all drawn in 3-d using all triangles. This moreover allows us to watch movies in 3-d version.
