m A beautiful media element

m Represents information that is need to be seen

and perceived
m ³A picture speaks a thousand words´
m Ohen placing images in multimedia application, it
is important to have a good understanding of what
images are
m Image can be classified into two:
M Raster Image
M Vector Image
m A raster image is composed of a mosaic of colored
squares called pixels or (picture element)
m ©ach pixel has a color value. Pixels can display on
to million of colors.
m ©ach pixels color value is stored in the file.
m Image dimension is reflected in the width and
height of an image
m Oe commonly measure images by inches like
3x5(3R) or 4X6 (4R). But these measures are
suitable for photo printing
m For digital images, we measure dimensions in
pixels. (1024px by 860px)
m he resolutions describes how clear the image
appears on screen or on print
M 0creen Resolution is defined as the number of pixels per
inch or PPL
M Print Resolution is defined as the number of dots per inch
or DPI
m Increasing of the PPI/DPI leads to a higher
resolution image
m igher resolution leads to a higher image quality
m igh Quality images are clearer and have more
details visible
m Low Resolution Images get distorted when they
are enlarged.
m Distortion happens because the pixels are being
stretched
m ©nlarging picture does not increase resolution
m igh Resolution Images do not distorted when
they are enlarged
m he file size of an image increases as the
resolution increases
m It is important to find balance between resolution
and the file size
m Raster Images are best used in multimedia
applications if you need to show an actual, real,
evidence of something or someone
m he most common image file formats include:
M ÑP© (Ñoint Photographic ©xperts roup)
6 Pronounced as Ñay-peg
6 Capable of displaying millions of colors at once
M IF ( raphics Interchange Format)
6 Pronounced as Ñif
6 Can be stored at maximum of 256 colors
M PN (Portable Network raphic)
6 he PN file format is a higher resolution image created as
an alternative to IF to support transparency
M IFF (agged Image File Format)
6 File is owned by Adobe 0ystems
6 A common format used with image scanning
m A vector graphic is comprised of objects (shapes,
lines, ovals, curves etc.)
m ©ach object in the image is defined by a path
m Dbjects have stroke and fill properties
m 0troke (or outline) properties apply to the path of
an object
m Fill properties apply to the area enclosed by the
path
m Oeight
M Property refers to the line thickness, typically measured
in points
m Color
M Property describes the color of the line
m 0tyle
M Property shows the different stroke styles like solid line,
dashed line, or dotted line.
m Color
M Property describes the color of the object
m radient
M Property describes the direction of the gradient colors
applied to the object whether linear, radial or rectangular.
m exture
M Property describes the design of the texture applied on
the object whether moss, crumpled or woody.
m It is common for vector graphic designers to start
with the outline drawing before coloring the
graphic
m Programs that operate on Raster Images include
Adobe Photoshop and M0 Paint
m Programs that operate on Vector images include
Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, and
Corel Draw.
m Vectors graphic are best used in multimedia
applications when you need to:
M Represent a brand (logos)
M 0how something at a dissected view (parts of the heart)
M 0how something that cannot be captured by a digital
camera (Planets, 0olar 0ystem)
M 0how cartoon drawings
M Represent a space with a map
M 0how creative illustraions
m he most common Vector raphic format include:
M AI (Adobe Illustrator File)
6 AI is a file drawn / colored in Adobe Illustrator.
M 0V (0calable Vector raphic)
6 0V files are quite complex programmed files in XML.
6 his files usually require a special player to be viewed
m Vector Images created in AI or 0V format are not
compatible for use in multimedia applications or
the Oeb
m Most designers would save digitally created
graphics as ÑP© or PN (for transparency)
m Capture your Dwn
m Dnline image galleries
m he only way to capture digital images is with a
digital cameras
M Point and 0hoot Digital Cameras
M Digital 0ingle Lens Reflex Camera (D0LR)
m hese are compact, small and portable, and
suitable for casual and ³snapshoot´ use
m Images are store in ÑP© format
m Features
M Resolution of 3 megapixels to 15 megapixels
M Built in Flash
M Memory card slot for external storage
M Live preview on an LCD screen to frame the photo
M Autofocus, macro, and zoom capability
M 0elf-imer
m Film Camera are also be useful, but images would
still have to be processed and scanned to become
a digital form.
m Digital Cameras are more advantageous over film
cameras
M Displaying images on a screen immediately
M 0toring thousands of images on a single small memory
device
M Previewing what has been stored
M Deleting image to free storage space
M Basic image manipulation and editing features
m 0LR¶s are more expensive, heavier and bigger but
give better resolution, quality and focus.
m 0LR¶s have a faster shutter speed. It does not
have much of a delay when clicking several snaps
consecutively.
m 0LR¶s allow you to change lenses according to
what you need to shoot
M Landscape photos ± wide-angle lens
M Pugs and Flowers ± macro lens
M Animals ± tele-photo lens
m 0LR¶s take high quality photos even in low lighting
(without the flash)
m aking pictures is within your control if you use an
0LR
m Oebcam
m Mobile Phones
m 0py Cameras
m 0urveillance Cameras
m Video Cameras
m ‰0B Cable
m Most digital cameras come with a cable that
connects the camera to a ‰0B port on your
computer
m Memory Card Reader

m Image editing is the process of altering images
with an image editor software
m Raster images can be edited. heir pixels contain
the image¶s color and brightness information
m Image editors can change the pixels to enhance
the image in many ways
m Vector graphics software are used to create and
modify vector images
m 0traightening
m Cropping
m Adjusting brightness and contrast
m Removing Red-©ye
m Adjusting Color Modes
m Adjusting 0aturation
m Adjusting emperature
m Adjusting ©xposure
m Blur and 0harpen ©ffects
