EVOLUTION OF FASHION

1910S
+ This was a time of modernization
+ People began shopping from retail stores and
catalog retailers such as Sears, Roebuck, and
L.L. Bean
+ World War I (1914-1918) had an influence on
fasion
+ Tunics were worn over skirts
+ Utilitarian clothing was also used
+ Women also began wearing uniforms as they
joined the work force
+ France was a fashionable source of clothing but
slowed down the production of new trends
during the war
+ After the war, a barrel silhouette was used
(skirts were still long but shaped like a cylinder)
+ This developed into the popular flapper look of
the 1920s
1920S
+ The world was still facing effects
from WWI
+ These new styles showed lots of
simplicity
+ They were convenient and were
worn because there was a rejection
of multiple layers at the time
+ The Flapper look or it’s proper name
(la garconne)
+ Women also were given the right to
vote, according to the Nineteenth
amendment
+ They began to run for political office
and worked at professional jobs
1940S
+ World War II began in 1939 and ended in
1945
+ Many countries’ fashion development was
affected
+ France was made the center of women’s
fashion design
+ When Germany occupied France, many
designers fled
+ Its fashion became totally different from
that of other countries
+ Other countries used a rationing system
+ Utility clothing was also used
+ Ready to Wear clothing thrived in the US
+ After the war, women wore “The New
Look” by Dior. It used a cinched waist
with a long skirt.
1960S
+ Decade of protests
+ Civil rights movement
+ Lots of fashion was based off of First
Lady Jaqueline Kennedy
+ She wore boxy skirt-suits and luxurious
accessories
+ Audrey Hepburn influenced fashion with
the classic black dress
+ Swinger fashion in London was based
off of youth
+ The most popular styles were the
miniskirt and the minidress
+ There was a focus on scientific progress
which encouraged innovative designs
+ Designs moved to freeing looks
1970S
+ Boutiques sold ready to wear clothing
+ Women wanted to create a more
nurturing society
+ They wanted access to male
dominated universities and businesses
+ Continuation of hippie style
+ As disco became more popular,
women wore glamorous night styles
and sequins
+ Began wearing clothing inspired by
menswear
+ Women worked outside the home
even more and fashion became very
comfortable
1980S
+ The rise of television
influenced youth
+ Teens tuned into MTV to
watch music videos that
included wildly dressed
celebs
+ Bold style, colors, and
silhouettes
+ Blocky shapes
+ Velvet and a high waistline
+ Cyndi Lauper influenced
fashion
1990S
+ Disco lost popularity
+ This decade wasn’t as
bright and loud as 80s
+ Smarter and classier
+ Common clothing: Black
leggings, low heel shoes,
flannel, denim, t-shirts, silk
shirts, and white Keds
+ Everyone’s fashion
completely changed
+ Anything 80s was gross
2000S
+ Internet developed and brought us
Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook
+ Reality TV was a big deal
+ Paris Hilton was huge influence
on fashion
+ Trends:
– Low rise jeans
– Yoga pants
– Tube Tops
– Denim Jackets
– Crop Tops
– Track Suits
– Cargo Pants
