1) Negligence on workers part:
ð Casual attitude

ð Slept during the working hours

ð This behavior could be hazardous

2) Lenient top management:
ð No strict action against workers who were
caught sleeping by Director (Personnel)

ð When they tried to file a charge sheet ,

they were easily influenced by the union
leaders who promised to handle the
situation
ð No stern proceedings

ð This petty issue could be handled by the middle

managers without involving the top management

ð Inability of management to take care of growing

problem
3) Lack of trust between middle level and
top management:
ð No alignment between objectives of
middle managers and senior
management

ð lack of transparency and understanding

between the two levels.
4)Lack of communication regarding the
training need to the middle managers:
ð They were directly told about their inability to
conduct a domestic inquiry and requirement
of extra training module
ð Lack of communication agitated the
employees and they lost the motivation to
undergo the training
ð They did not feel the need to undergo the
training leading to a conflict

1) Taking an action against those employees
who are found sleeping during duty hours

² Using Reinforcement theory by B.F. Skinner

(B.F. Skinner·s theory of reinforcement says that
when a particular kind of behavior is not wished
to be repeated then you either use concept of
punishment and extinction)
2) Designing a stringent policy/rule and anyone
defaulting it would be expelled

( Here we assume that due to lack of definite

code of conduct this behavior is seen)
3) Identifying the cause of the problem:
] Try and recognize the reasons for lack of
motivation and commitment in employees
that acts as a barrier in their productivity
] Try filling the gaps and fulfilling their needs to
prevent their negative behavior
-Using Herzbergs theory
4) Imparting training to workers on work-
life balance:
] Make them aware of the seriousness of the issue
] Make them aware of the perils of their negligence

5)Giving training to middle level managers

on domestic inquiry in a very subtle way
6) Making sure that the training is
imparted and not imposed on the
employees as they are adult learners

7) Some advanced management programs can

be designed for the senior managers so that
they can decide and identify what actions to
take at which time in case of a bad conflict

The comments of the participants show that:
1)´We know the importance of discipline.
What we need is not training but proof that
top management means what it says. What
we need is not training but proof that top
management means what it saysµ.
They did not feel the need for that extra
training module on domestic inquiry.
The participants (middle managers) were
probably upset that strict action was not
taken by the senior managers, & that
rule of one should be rule for all.
2) ´we will be able to have confidence in
the top management if it shows us the
way by 1st initiating the action on the
cases they themselves have bookedµ
-lost confidence in the top management.
3) ´ We see no evidence of follow up of
any kindµ

-lack of trust in top management

2) ´ y r liz t t rt g t is
r ly si g y t r f c lty s ff r?µ

-tr i sf li g f f tr i i g.
5)´Top management is merely wanting to change
our personality but does not want to change
the situationµ
-training taken in a negative way
