Direction for SYEP 2011
• Our internal motto for the 2011 SYEP is:

“Perfecting the process, Improving the Quality”.

This motto highlights our desire to build upon the aspects
of the program that have been working well and to
continue them and ultimately perfect them.

Meanwhile, we will ensure that we are improving the


quality of the individual experience each youth and
employer will have this summer.

Program Dates
• The 2011 SYEP will begin on Monday, June 27
and will end on Friday, August 5 (Monday, July 4
is observed as a holiday).

• This time period also coincides with the beginning

and end of summer school for DC Public Schools
(DCPS) students.

Size of the Program
• The 2011 SYEP program will serve a maximum of
10,000 District youth.
• There will be 3,000 slots available to youth ages 14-
15;

• There will be 7,000 slots available to youth ages 16-
21.

Youth Application and
Certification
• Youth will be able to apply to participate in the 2011 SYEP by completing the online application
at www.summerjobs.dc.gov.

• The online application will become available on Friday, February 25 at 3:15pm. Space is
limited and applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Once space is full, youth will see a message at the top of the application page and will receive
a confirmation email with the same message.
• Youth should still complete the online application in case space opens up due to youth not

following through on additional steps.

• In order for a youth to secure their spot, they must do two things:
• Complete the online application at www.summerjobs.dc.gov.
• Prove that they are eligible to participate in the SYEP by Saturday, March 19

• In order for a youth to maintain their spot, they must complete additional requirements
including:
• Completing an online youth orientation program;
• Viewing an informational video about financial management and choosing their banking option for
the summer (direct deposit or bank card);
• Submitting a resume (for consideration for the most selective job opportunities); and possibly
other pre-program measures.

• Youth who do not complete these items when they are assigned by the specified deadline will 5
be subject to forfeiture of their space in the program.
Certification Events
• Youth will be invited to bring in their certification
documents to several in-person certification events that
will be held in locations throughout the city during
evenings and weekends.

include:
• Saturdays, March 5 – March 19 from 12-4pm;
• Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays starting on February 28
– March 17 from 4-7pm;
• Monday, February 28 from 10-7pm (no school for DCPS);
• Friday, March 18 from 10-5pm (no school for DCPS)

• Additional certification events will be announced if deemed


necessary. 6
SYEP Youth Portal
• Once a youth registers for the SYEP, they will be automatically directed to the
SYEP Youth Portal. The portal is designed to provide real-time information in a
kid-friendly interface. Through the SYEP Youth Portal, youth will be able to:

• Check the status of their eligibility and view which specific documents they have
submitted and which are still outstanding;
• View all email correspondences and important message sent from OYP
pertaining to their SYEP application;
• View a database of available summer job positions and apply for specific jobs

they find interesting;
• Post a copy of their resume or use an OYP-designed application that will help
them to develop their resume and submit to potential employers;
• Learn about the importance of financial management and choose their preferred
banking method for their potential summer earnings (standard VISA debit card,
direct deposit to an existing checking or savings account, or direct deposit to a
newly opened account through on of our Bank On DC financial partners);
• View and complete an online youth orientation program;
• View their final job assignment information and request a transfer for medical or
safety reasons;
• View their total hours worked each pay period prior to the actual pay date;
• View their Summer Performance Evaluation (first week assessment and post-
program assessment).

Job Matching and
Assignments
• Host employers will have the ability to screen, interview, and
select the specific youth from our eligible applicant pool who they
would like to hire.
• Beginning on Monday, April 4, youth applicants will be able to
access an online database to view and apply for specific jobs that
they are interested in. Employers will be able to access our youth
database to view youth profiles and see which youth have applied
to their posted job positions. Employers will be able to view their

resumes and their contact information so that they can begin
conducting telephone interviews.
• DOES will sponsor a SYEP Job Expo tentatively on Wednesday,
April 20 and Thursday, April 21. This event will be open to all
eligible youth applicants. Employers will have the ability to
interview and select candidates on the spot. Final selections are
due by Saturday, April 30.
• Employers who do not wish to screen or interview youth may
request that DOES place youth on their behalf.
• OYP will assign youth to job positions based on the selections
made by employers and youth. Final notifications will be provided
on Tuesday, May 24. Youth who are unhappy with their job 8
assignment will be able to request a transfer only for medical or
safety reasons up until Friday, June 17.
SYEP Support Center
• Once online registration begins, the Office of Youth Programs will
establish an SYEP Support Center for youth who need assistance
with their application.

• The SYEP Support Center will be the central hub for all telephone
and in-person inquiries related to the SYEP. The Support Center
will be located at the DOES Office of Youth Programs which is

located at 4058 Minnesota Avenue NE, 2nd Floor. Youth will also
be able to call the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center, 311, to be
directed to speak with a Support Center operator.

• OYP will establish a set of regular Office Hours so that youth may
walk-in, or youth may contact OYP to schedule an appointment.

• Once the application process is over, staff in the SYEP Support


Center will also be able to assist youth with identifying job
opportunities they are interested in, completing their resume,
and helping them with the orientation requirements. 9
SYEP Kick-off Event
• In an effort to promote awareness about the opening of
registration and to provide a resource for youth who do not have
regular access to computers or who will need assistance
completing the online application, OYP will host a SYEP
Registration Kick-Off Event.

• Attendance at the kick off event is not mandatory as registration


can be completed from any computer with an internet
connection. However, youth who do attend in person are also
welcome to bring their certification documents in order to get a
jump on the second part of the process. 10
How YOU Can Help!
There are several ways you can help us to make this program
as successful as possible:
• Share information about registration to youth in your community;
• Reach out to your employer contacts and encourage them to get
involved;
• Volunteer to conduct Site Visits on behalf of DOES;
