Greenvale Primary Curriculum
Committee
° The question arises about who should be
responsible for planning the curriculum and
who should decide what comprises the
curriculum. The curriculum transmits the
society͛s culture and is affected by its values
and its needs. Therefore, a wide cross-
section of persons are involved in the
curriculum development process. The
persons who should be on the curriculum
development committee includes:
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
KMinistry of Education
K Principals
K Teachers
K Students
K Curriculum Specialists/Coordinators
KParents/Community Representatives
K Private sector
K Professional organizations
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
Ministry of Education:
° Interprets the Government͛s philosophy of
education.
° The Government͛s National policies of education
are broke down into schools͛ goals at the various
educational levels. These goals are further broken
down into aims and objectives from which
content, learning activities, methods and
evaluation will develop.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Principals:
È Support risk taking and creativity in teachers,
È Allocate time and resources for curriculum,
instruction, and assessment development,
È Promote action research in their schools,
È |   is a reflective process of
progressive problem solving led by individuals
working with others in teams or as part of a
"community of practice" to improve the way they
address issues and solve problems
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Teachers:
Teachers training equips them with skills and
expertise to help to decide what the learners
should know, what knowledge, values, skills,
attitudes they should acquire. What the learners
should feel, what will motivate them, their
interests, appreciations, their social well-being;
what they should know, how to help them
develop physical and manual skills, so that they
develop into well-rounded persons.
The Participants in the
Curriculum Development
Process are:
È What is taught in the classroom is
mostly decided by the teacher.
È Teachers are specially trained to
educate society͛s children or to
be facilitators of formal
education.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:

° The teacher choose and plan the curriculum with


other teachers and administrators according to
the students, who they are, what their probable
future is, and what lessons would be most useful
for them.
° For e.g. A teacher that believes the world will
increasingly use computers at all levels of society
will include computers in all levels of instruction.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Students:
͞Children and youths͟ are the ͞consumers͟ in
the educational process.Doll (1992)
È Teachers have to consult with students to plan
with them at different intervals.
È Students can influence curriculum decisions
through students͛ organizations and councils.
È They can criticize existing programmes, makes
suggestions for modification or improvement.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Students can also express their
concerns on matters relative
to discipline, dress code,
preparation for the job market
or the usefulness and
relevance of certain subject
matter.
The Participants in the Curriculum

È Students can help define
acceptable levels of
expectations.
È Identify motivating practices
to improve student
participation
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Parents/ Community Representatives:
È Are able share their expertise and
experiences;
È serve as cooperative advisors, editors, and
advocates for their children.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Professional organizations:
È Professional organizations like the Jamaica
Teachers Association (J.T.A.) and the Joint Board
of Teacher Education (JBTE) do make valuable
contributions to the curriculum.
È Communicate any adjustments to be made to the
syllabus͛s or examinations.
È Communicates Education resolutions that are
passed by teachers for improvements or addition
to curriculum areas.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È The Joint Boards of Teacher Education ( JBTE)
are also directly involved in the curriculum
development process.
È The JBTE considers and recommends or
approves the syllabuses of teachers͛ colleges,
examines and assesses the work of students in
training and make recommendations on
teacher training and allied matters to the
appropriate authorities.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Private Sector:
È Business and industry will need school leavers
with certain skills to fill their manpower
needs, hence they sometimes exert pressure
on the school, to include areas in technical,
commercial, industrial and agricultural
training in the curriculum so as to provide
skilled personnel for the business sector.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Private companies also sponsor various types
of sports and debating competitions thus
providing sources for educational objectives in
physical education, sports and areas of the
language arts.
È They also fund research in various areas in
order to advance quality education, assist in
running workshops in computer instruction,
provide hardware and software,
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Fund publications on educational technology,
offer onʹthe-job training for school leavers
through the schools work experience
programme.
È Provide resource persons, and from time to
time, offer assistance to schools in various
projects.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È Curriculum Specialists/ Coordinators:
È Provide assistance in developing and
designing school practices that coincide with
the philosophy of the school and community.
È Assist to answer questions such as; what the
school͛s purpose is? What subjects are of
value, how students learn, and what methods
and materials to use.
The Participants in the Curriculum
Development Process are:
È They also stress issues such as
subject content and its organization,
the process of teaching and learning
and, in general, what experiences
and activities to stress in schools and
classrooms.
