MSS NOMINEES

AY 2011-2012
PRESIDENT
ROLAND ANGELES
WHAT IS YOUR VISION
FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL
YEAR?
I wish for the MSS to evolve into the even more powerful and dynamic organization it has the potential
to be and represent even more what a UP Medical student should be. I aspire for the organization to
reach new heights, seize the intra-campus scene, and offset erroneous misconceptions and negative
perceptions it may have incurred. Specifically, I aim for the MSS to expand its artillery of activities from
just its usual armaments composed of circumcision medical missions, FATE, TRP, COWS and ICPC, and
include an array of innovative undertakings that builds on the other facets of the organization such as
multi-skill competency, service, socio-civic awareness, and medical knowledge advancement. Corollary
to this is the engagement in activities geared towards provision of maximal benefits and opportunities
for growth to the organization’s constituents, while mutually imparting key contributions to the UPCM
community and beyond. For this to materialize, it is but imperative that the MSS undergo innovative
restructuring and refurbish its annual scheme, to pave the way for timely enhancements in response to
its growing membership while ensuring that tradition is not neglected.

To succeed in these endeavors however, it is necessary to maintain the current rate of expansion and
to generate new experiences that may pique the interests of constituents (both old and new) and
potential applicants. More aggressive publicity and marketing of the MSS essential tenets should be
carried out to address the former, while generation of new experiences to pique the interests of
constituents (old and new) and potential applicants, to address both. A key element in this is to design
a scheme in which intrinsic motivation to work for the organization’s principles is developed in our
members.
Specific
visions/recommendations for
the incoming year are as
follows:
For the new members to be given freer reigns and more authority to decide on activities or projects they wish to carry out in
the pursuit of their interests or what they think the MSS needs. For the MSS to maintain an environment where new
members are ensured that they can provide productive inputs without fear of reproach or unenthusiastic reception.

For communication lines to be improved by making use of technology easily available today. Such examples include using
video streaming technology to augment general assemblies, restructuring the info-dissemination system and taking
advantage of popular internet-based social networks to facilitate easy communication among members. General assemblies
should be appropriated with adequate funding to ensure proper venues and equipment. These tasks should be allotted with
I propose this task to be carried out by an expanded Secretariat committee/Internal affairs committee composed not only of
a single individual but an aggregate of members. This is all the more necessary because improved communication has
become even more vital and difficult to achieve due to the large increase in membership.

For the executive committee to hold true to the agreements and recommendations that materialized during the TRP
Convention last February.

For the publicity committee to be more aggressive in showcasing the MSS vision-mission, principles and essence,
particularly targeting the younger populations. Pursuant with the recommendations during the last TRP convention, I will
encourage the publicity committee to embark on a commitment to generate marketing materials – a video profile of the
MSS and TRP at the very least.

For the socials committee to take up the challenge of becoming the means for MSS to reach out to its members (in
cooperation with the acads and special proejects committee), and provide avenues to build rapport among members
through simple activities such as detox nights (sports fests, movie nights, food trips, etc.) and regular team-building
activities.

For the membership committee to increase recruitment in LUs I-II, and to maintain the current gusto in recruitment for the
rest of the years. Also, innovations in regards to the usual recruitment and initiation scheme will be encouraged.
For the special projects committee to strengthen its social arm and be a bridge or a means for the MSS
to provide substantial contributions to the UPCM community and the Philippine society. I will
recommend also that the special projects committee provide members with alternative avenues for
growth (alternative to academic avenues), such as skill enhancement activities targeting technological
know-how, leadership, career opportunities, and the like.
For the academics committee to continue bolstering the academic endeavors of its members. It is
recommended that it be the counterpart of the special projects inside the organization – that it aim to
provide substantial contributions to the members and assist them in achieving success in their main
undertaking: their medical education.
To provide logistics support and marketing support to the finance committee who will remain to be the
backbone of all MSS activities. It will be recommended that some of the burdens of the finance
committee be alleviated by having other committees organize at least 1 income-generating activity.
Meanwhile, the finance committee will be encouraged to obtain partnerships with corporate sponsors
throughout the year, with the assistance of the publicity committee (who will create the org profiles,
etc. often asked for by willing companies).

For the TRP to explore new territories and not shy away from innovations and improvements. The
recommendations during the TRP Convention will be strongly recommended to the future TRP team,
with emphasis on illuminating the principles and process behind the event, and making it play a more
pivotal role in the UPCM community.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
1. More O.C.-ily-planned activities and projects like FATE and TRP
How? Oversight (a.k.a. pangungulit sa project heads :) =p, early
dissemination of task assignments, OC-OC tables (to borrow from MSSR =p
para malinaw ang task assignments and deadlines, etc.)
2. More projects for our own MSS members – para naman masabi ng
members natin na may benefit na makukuha sa pagsali nila sa MSS.
3. More love for the org! Dahil we’ve been through a lot, and it’s been
tested many many times, solid pa rin tayo at nagmamahalan. Dahil masaya
sa MSS!
4. Nandito pa rin ang MSS! MSS has survived 37 fun and challenging years,
dadagdagan pa natin ‘yan! We’ll get through anything!

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
I envision a society that is cohesive when coming up with vital
decisions to improve the org. Also, it’s time we go beyond TRP as
our org’s identity. We have to be more proactive in coming up with
more socially-relevant projects like charity works, community-
building activities, outreaches and the like. Lastly, I envision an
organization that has a firm stand on issues concerning the student
body, the College, and ultimately the country.

One Organization, One Barkada, One Family
An MSS that is united in all its endeavors; comprised of
members that are dedicated and work together in all of the
projects of the organization; competent in that all are
informed of what is MSS and what exactly does MSS do;
inspired to wall tall, be proud, and stay MSS.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
I want an MSS that is open and honest, all cards on the table. One that works
for others, but doesn’t forget itself in the process. I want us to remember
camaraderie, and that we’re here not only for FATE, TRP or ICPC. I think we should
also establish events that not only have us working, but also actually bonding with
each other. How well do we know each other, really? Even simple get-togethers,
dinners, or spontaneous movie nights for no apparent reason, could be the one step
we need in order to get that kickoff energy I want us to have. I’ve always found it
easier to work with friends rather than strangers/acquaintances, so I think future
projects will only be better once we are better accustomed to each other, outside of
work. I’ve found comfort and many friendships through MSS, and so I want this not
only to be a mere college organization, but become like a family for everyone.
And of course, regarding being a secretary, I’ll make sure to keep files,
meetings, etc well-documented, and that every member stays well-informed. 

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
The MSS is a community of students who are not only competent
in the field of medicine, but are examples of strength in character
and are good members of the Filipino society. The MSS member is

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
I envision an MSS which stands firm and united amidst success or adversity. Specifically, through
the special projects committee, the organization will maintain its success as an established and
accomplished organization by investing on its members’ growth, personally and professionally,
through these various activities:
ァ MSS Week (MSS Exhibit, Committee Exhibits, Fair, Team Building Activities, etc)
ァ Regular peer clinical/health skills training (Vital Signs, First Aid, BLS, etc.)
ァ Service activities to fellowmen (Medical Missions, and Blood Drive)
ァ Better facilities for the members
o Coordinate with Alumni Committee to organize database of MSS Alumni
o Coordinate with UPMASA to reach MSS Alumni abroad
o Lobby for funding of feasible improvement/renovation of the tambayan (extension,
repainting, additional storage areas, purchase of mosquito lights, etc.)

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
For the org in general, I want MSS to vie for more transparent governance –
not only among members, but also to the entire UP Med community.
For the Socials and Culture Committee specifically, I wish to be part of more
activities that give an opportunity for the members to build stronger
relationships. Physical activity is always a fun and rewarding way for
members to interact, and so as part of the Socials and Culture Committee I
can help bring about such team building activities. Also, albeit this
committee is always equated to the ‘fun’ side of the org, I believe that
partying and enjoying ourselves can serve more than mere means of detox,
but also to help out the other projects and functions of the org, or even a
cause greater than it.

ALUMNI
TIN YALUNG
Vision
I envision an organization that has not only camaraderie but solidarity through its
ranks –alumni who know their undergrad members and undergrad members who
know their alumnae. Generations meeting together not just to talk about solicitations
and trouble shooting, but also of the origins of the organization and how it evolved
through the many years that we have been in existence. Generations working
together to become more holistic doctors through joint projects and advocacies.

A few steps that we can take towards solidarity are:

Educating the undergraduate members of the history and intent of the annual projects we currently have and
also some of the projects we have abandoned in the past – not just through write ups in souvenir programs
but through actual story telling. The undergraduate members have the right and responsibility to know that
TRP used to be held at the PGH court and it used to be just a medley of songs and other such performances
to break down the tension between the ranks, hence rendering those above Tao Rin Pala. The alumni will
have a chance to tell their stories and the undergraduates would have the opportunity to learn more and
possibly , love our projects more. And with love, there’s more effort put into it, lessening the mistakes made
and the burden on everyone’s shoulders.
But it’s not just about the alumni helping us it’s also about us helping our alumni. I would like to get in touch
with our alumnae and possibly get involved in their projects too. We can help with projects that are just being
conceptualized OR we can help them realize some that’s already taking shape. We can be partners in their
advocacies and by doing so, we not only help them but we also grow as an organization.
TAGLINE/THEME
Solidarity through the generations,
for a taller and prouder MSS.
JUSTIN REGALADO
Vision for MSS next year:
To have an MSS that slowly gears its activities and preparations towards its Ruby
anniversary in 2013. In line with this, the MSS will work to bring back to its fold, all possible
alumni that have existed since the time of the organization’s inception. Similar to the
UPMASA, we will start to build our alumni base, to help the MSS fund its activities, and to
further its growth and expansion into other venues that our other committees deem
beneficent to the organization, the students, and the people we serve.
Also in line with the Ruby preparations, we will spearhead a planning seminar involving
incumbent members and alumni that will allow the MSS to guide itself into the next 10
years, with a continuity protocol and platform to make ourselves an organization worthy of a
Golden Anniversary and beyond.
MSS Tagline:
We’ve walked tall. We’ve walked proud.
Onwards to 40 years of Staying MSS...

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
For the upcoming school year 2011-2012, I see MSS as the organization to produce and
hone more leaders not only in student organizations and councils, but also in their future
careers either as respective doctors, researchers and other fields of practice, with
leadership workshops and talks to be held. Working with the doctors and alumni of MSS,
we can hold a career talk/ leadership seminars and workshops where these Doctors can
share their experiences with their respective practices, and give us reminders, tips and
lessons on how we may become more efficient student leaders and future clinicians in
the respective fields of practice we choose.
I also see an MSS which reaches out even more towards communities needing social and
medical support, as well as an MSS, responsive towards the needs for creating and
honing the quintessential five star physician.

TRP 38: Seasons – celebrate change
RYAN MAGTIBAY
WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MSS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?
A braver MSS that opens up to changes, takes chances, and makes necessary steps to be better.
I envision a society that addresses the needs of the current members of the society and not anyone else.
This vision involves an MSS that is not solely bent on making TRP work period, but celebrates its preparation and
creation as well. It should strike a balance: a society of medical students, at the same time, an organizer of a wonderful
event. It should be recognized as both, as well.
That said, the dichotomy would work if the current formula in organizing TRP would be revised and enhanced to be
more efficient and adaptive to the workforce and to TRP’s audience as well. More so, TRP should be a vehicle for MSS
members to be closer to one another and the process of preparing for TRP should be designed as not just mere work but
opportunities to learn and to get to know people.
The challenge with TRP is to break away from the usual formula and introduce an all-new hype, most especially with the
challenges it went through last year. It has to be repackaged and reintroduced, as much as the level of the event should be
raised so as to cement its status in the college. After all, MSS is bent on making TRP its most prized legacy to the college. If
that would be so, TRP has to be sustainable, as much as it is easy to tweak and adjust to an evolving audience.
This involves introducing bolder and braver themes – specific themes, abstract themes, or innovative ones that are unlike
those used before. This means introducing changes on the current format – setting of time, chronology of performances,
revised segments – and paving way to introduce and encourage other types of performing arts. More so, TRP has lagged in
terms of using modern day technologies to its advantage – like the use of the internet, actual working cameras for the
videos and up to date editing software for the final product – and remains tied up to the traditions of the past. This involves
introduction of many innovations to create an all new show that people can get hyped about once more.
