The Father of Body Language
ã
B.S., M.S. Engineering (MIT), Ph.D. Psychology

His background in engineering and natural science has provided him

with a distinct approach to his work in psychology. Knowing that it is
impossible to test the validity of ideas without measures, he has
devoted much of his forty-plus years of research to the development of
psychological scales and major theoretical models for describing and
measuring complex psychological phenomena.

For example, professor Mehrabian is known for his pioneering work in the field of nonverbal
communication (body language). His theoretical work and experiments helped identify nonverbal
and subtle ways in which one conveys like-dislike, power and leadership, discomfort and insecurity,
social attractiveness, persuasiveness, and ways to detect when others are being deceptive in
communication.

Professor Mehrabian's major theoretical contributions include a three-dimensional mathematical

model for the precise and general description and measurement of emotions. His emotion scales are
used to assess consumer reactions to products, services, and is today being used by most Executive
search firms to assess candidates during interview sessions.
The Mehrabian Research
In the 1960s, Mehrabian carried out a research on the assessment
of the relative impact of facial expressions and spoken words.

The Result
Total Impact = 7% Verbal + 38% Vocal + 55% FacialThis is

ã communications happens by:

* 7% spoken words.
* 38% Voice tone.
* 55% General body language.

Argument
This cannot be true!

* Does an email only convey 7%?

* Can you watch a person speaking in a foreign language and
understand 93%?

V

Ëhilst the exact numbers may be challenged, the important points
can easily be lost in the debate about how valid or not the study was.

Useful extensions to this understanding are:

* It's not just words
* A lot in communication comes through non-verbal communication.
