 One of the vital keys to success is the ability to
communicate effectively. In wake of
globalization and interaction with international
markets, the need to understand and
communicate, especially in English, has become
more important than ever. English
communication skills help the individuals to be
more confident and effective in the language (for
professional and personal enhancement: individual need,
situation, purpose and role: write effective memos, letters
and reports, prepare and deliver effective presentations)
What is Communication?
 It is an exchange of information, news, ideas etc
among people
 Communication is a process of transmitting and
receiving verbal and nonverbal messages
 Communication is effective when message is
conveyed and understood
 Two way process of exchanging ideas

Communication Skills
 Communication skills involve the human ability to
convey one’s ideas, thoughts or messages etc in a
proper and understandable manner
There are three modes of communication
1. Oral communication:
Major part of information flow
Face to face, telephonic conversation

2. Written communication:
Exchange of information, ideas etc in written words
Letters, e-mails, memorandums and reports

3. Non-verbal communication:
Exchange of ideas in symbols and gestures (hand,
eye, head)

The following are the six components of
communication:

1. Context

It’s the reason behind communication
 Every message, whether oral or written, begins
with context
 Includes country, culture, organization and
external and internal stimuli (both of sender and
receiver)
2. Sender (Encoder)
 As a sender you use symbols that express your
message and create the desired response
3. Message
 The core idea you wish to communicate; consists
of both verbal and nonverbal symbols
4. Medium
 The way in which message is conveyed. Depends
upon contextual factors and on the nature of
message itself
 It can be printed word, electronic mail or sound
(written or spoken)
5. Receiver (Decoder)
 Reader, listener or decoder
 Receiver is influenced by context and by his / her mental
filter (his / her own view and experiences of the world)

6. Feedback (Response)
 Reaction
 It determines the success or failure of communication
 It can be oral or written
