CYBERSAFETY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

Online, nobody really knows

who is lurking, socializing,
and waiting for a chance
to grab your personal information.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

We are all potentially at risk

when we are online,
but if you stay on guard,
you can protect yourself
from most online threats.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

Risky online behaviors include

 providing your personal information to people

you don’t know,

 harassing other online users, and

 building relationships with strangers.

BE CAREFUL ONLINE!
 Some online predators want
adults’ financial information
in order to steal identities.
 Other predators want children’s personal
information in order to find opportunities to
potentially hurt them.
 Everybody has to protect themselves online.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

 In the scenario, you saw

a 12-year old girl befriended
by a 13-year old girl
with the screen name Chrissy403.
 Chrissy403 was not a 13-year old
and was not a girl.
 Remember that you can really
never know who you are talking about!
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

When you are thinking

about sharing any kind
of personal information online,
you should think about a few things:
 Who will see this information?

 What will they do with this information?

 Can I trust them?

BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

When you sign up for accounts online,

there are a few things to keep in mind
while you’re filling out that form.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

 Only provide information

to reputable websites.
Look for the green https:// prefix on the URL.
 If it sounds too good to be true,
it might be a scam.
 Keep your anti-virus, anti-spyware,
and anti-malware software up-to-date.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

 Be VERY careful when you

use credit card numbers
(or your parents' credit card numbers).
 Nobody needs your social security number.
 If you give somebody your physical address,
they can find your house really easily
using the Internet.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

Having problems with someone

on the Internet is a potentially
serious situation.
Do not try to take care of it by yourself,
all alone.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

Whether you are having

second thoughts about
the identity of an online friend,
somebody is harassing you,
or something more serious is happening,
you need to talk to someone who can help you.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE!

If you are having trouble online

or with somebody
on a cell phone,
talk to your parents, a trusted adult,
an older sibling, or even just a friend.

You are not alone.
