INTRODUCTION

• An engine is a device, that transforms one form of energy into another form.

• Today all the automobiles, whether bike or a car have an engine that works on either
spark ignition system or on compression ignition system depending upon the fuel used .

• These automobiles pollutes the environment and are costly.

• There are different methods to avoid pollution problems such as electric cars, solar
cars, etc.

• But these techniques are also complicated and costly.

• To overcome such difficulties, an alternative source is to use an engine that will run
on compressed air and it is called “AIR CAR”
WHAT IS AN AIR CAR

• An Air Car is a car that can runs on compressed air alone without the use of
conventional fuels used in present day automobiles.

• The technology with which the air car runs is the “COMPRESSED AIR
TECHNOLOGY (CAT)”
COMPRESSED AIR TECHNOLOGY (CAT)

• Compressed Air Technology (C.A.T.) uses compressed air as its energy source and
requires no gasoline or batteries to drive the engine.

• C.A.T. is developed by Mr. Guy Negre to run engines with compressed air.

• This idea was inherited from the Formula 1 cars. As every Formula One engine
starts with a shot of compressed-air as an Energy-Booster.
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
WORKING OF C.A.T. ENGINES

In principle the technology is very similar to the internal combustion system in that
compressed air is used to drive a piston in a barrel.

SOME SPECIAL PARTS

1. ARTICULATED CON- ROD ARTICULATED CON- ROD

The MDI con-rod system allows the

piston to be held at Top Dead Centre for
70% of the cycle.
2. GEAR BOX

Gear changes are automatic, powered by an electronic system developed by

MDI.

3. COMPRESSED AIR TANKS

• The compressed air tank is a glass or carbon-fibre tank.

•These tanks hold 90 cubic metres of air compressed to 300 bars.

4. BRAKE POWER RECOVERY

The MDI vehicles will be equipped with a range of modern systems. For example,
one mechanism stops the engine when the car is stationary (at traffic lights,
junctions etc).

5. THE BODY

• The MDI car body is built with fibre and injected foam, as are most of the
cars on the market today.

•The advantage is the Cost and Weight.

6. THE AIR FILTER

• The MDI engine works with both air taken from the atmosphere and air
pre-compressed in tanks.

• Carbon filters are used.

7. THE CHASIS

MDI has put together highly-resistant, yet light, chassis, aluminum rods
glued together.
8. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

• With the increase in technology, the MDI has a more developed electrical
system.

• It uses Radio transmission.

• Reduces the wire weights about 22 kg.

FILLING UP

The air car that runs on compressed air can be filled up in two ways:-

1.By plugging the vehicle into any electrical power supply.

2.At Air stations.

HOW AIR-CAR HELPS TO REDUCE POLLUTION

The most important pollutants in car exhaust include :

1.Carbon monoxide (a poison).
2.Nitrogen oxides, and
3.Unburned hydrocarbons.

As about gasoline is the main source of pollution, if we use compressed air instead of
gasoline then we can improve environment.

ADVNATAGES

• Zero emission vehicle.

• No fossil fuel required.
• Operating cost 75% less as compare to the gasoline engines.
• Price is also less then half of the electric vehicles.
• The recharging time is much more less that EV.
• The recharging of tank can be done at house.
• Air conditioning with no extra cost.
DISADVANTAGES

• Speed,
• Recharging stations, and
• Weight
FUTURE SCOPE
• The moteur development industry (MDI) had tried to develop an engine for
bikes.

• Gas pollution is the main problem of pollution. Use of air car can reduce this
problem of pollution.

• The cost of fuel (gasoline like petrol, etc.) is also climbing to high value.
CONCLUSION

Nowadays the earth is facing the biggest problem of global warming, and the
increase in price of fuels, the compressed air technology i.e. zero emission
vehicles is the best feasible alternative and hence the complete solution of this
problem.
